Then, the suffering of torment will arise, because on their Alaya consciousness, the seeds of the nature of the hellish appearance are awakened. This is not unestablished, because the hellish appearance actually appears on the Alaya consciousness, and this also depends on the awakening of habits. This is also not uncertain, because by the power of the seeds, when they actually appear, they will bring benefit and harm, just as in dreams, the appearance of pleasant and unpleasant realms brings benefit and harm. The vessel of beings of the same kind is accomplished by the karma of both appearance transformation and enjoyment transformation, so it will bring benefit and harm, but the vessels of beings of different kinds are accomplished by the karma of appearance transformation, but not by the karma of enjoyment transformation, so it will not bring benefit and harm, and it cannot be said that way. Because some objects of form, sound, etc., for some beings of the same kind, what is seen is benefit, while for some beings, what is seen is harm. Moreover, since one does not accept a vessel other than the inner consciousness that appears as an image, therefore, merely the appearance of objects that appear as pleasant and unpleasant self-characteristics will bring benefit and harm, without relying on enjoyment transformation. For example, when the illusory Yama appears as the self-characteristic of Yama, it will generate fear, and when the illusory young woman appears as the self-characteristic of a young woman, it will generate attachment just by that. Furthermore, does the hell that appears on the Alaya consciousness of a person appear as it appears to hell beings, or does it not appear? If it is the former, then the hellish appearance is merely manifested by the karma of the hell beings themselves, which is not established. If you admit it, then "Who made the iron-burning ground? From where did the multitude of women come? Therefore, all of these, are produced by sinful minds, said by the Buddha." This statement becomes an obstacle. Moreover, it must be admitted that just as the vessel appears on the Alaya consciousness of a person, it also appears on the Alaya consciousness of hell. If so, then, as it is said, "Hungry ghosts, animals, humans, and gods, how each category, the same thing, minds are different, therefore, it is an unestablished meaning." In this way, the reasoning that the external object is not established will also be abandoned. If it is said that it appears that way to the root consciousness of those beings, and that the appearance of that and the Alaya consciousness are not the same.

Thus, the five objects appearing to the sense consciousness are both the apprehended aspect of the ālaya, as the scripture says, 'The consciousness that appears as an object arises.' And it has already been shown by 'The five consciousnesses grasp,' and so on. According to the second view, it does not appear as it does to the hell-beings, but if it is asserted that the nature of the appearance of hell appears, then it would be too extreme, because it would also appear to all the happiness of the happy realms. The remaining four lines should also be understood by analogy with this reasoning. Therefore, some Abhidharma masters assert that one ālaya consciousness appears from the fourth dhyāna down to Avīci. However, some say that the fourth dhyāna is not common and is accomplished by karma, so it does not appear, but appears to others. There are other views as well. In the Vinaya-vibhāga, after considering the meaning of 'The object and aspect of this cannot be completely cut off,' they think that all the substances of the outer and inner world that cannot be cut off by measure appear, but there is no proof for this, and there is harm. If you say, 'No, this scripture itself is harmful,' the meaning of that scripture is not that all the outer and inner world that cannot be cut off by measure appears, but that the ālaya consciousness itself cannot clearly determine such an object, held by such aspects, and cannot lead to subsequent certainty, otherwise the previous harm will arise. If asked, then what kind of outer and inner world appears in the two lower realms? The answer is: actually, it is one's own sense object. Indirectly, it is the six aggregates of that. Whatever can appear as an object is also established as an object of the ālaya consciousness. Actually, the object is the object that appears to the senses of one's own continuum, and indirectly, whatever can appear as the object of the six aggregates of that basis is also established as the object of the ālaya consciousness of that basis. If asked, then in the commentary on 'sentient being,' it says, 'A sentient being is whatever appears as the five senses in the continuum of oneself and others,' does that contradict? The answer is: that is to say that the senses that appear to the ālaya consciousness are the five senses of the continuum of oneself and others, and it does not mean that the five senses of oneself and others actually appear to one ālaya consciousness. If it is not like that, then if the senses of others that actually appear to one's own ālaya consciousness are the nature of the senses of the continuum of others, then beings
