Even if we allow that there are afflictions and innate ego-grasping at birth, the continuum from birth until the mind of death arises will become without ego-grasping, because there is no afflicted mind and the six aggregates cease. If you say that when one is first born, the mind with ego-grasping manifests, and after that, even though ego-grasping does not manifest, it is still with ego-grasping because there is a latent imprint, that is not acceptable, because the basis of ego-grasping, the mind consciousness, does not exist, and the form aggregate cannot be the basis for the ripening of latent imprints. If the gods of the formless realm do not have ego-grasping, they will become non-afflicted. If you accept that, then the noble ones would not see those formless realms as unfavorable states and would not abandon them. It is also not the case that they would see them as unfavorable states and abandon them simply because the six aggregates are pacified, like in cessation. If there is an afflicted mind, then ego-grasping and so on will arise in all ways, and because there are no six aggregates, one would have to remain in samsara for five hundred great eons due to inverted thinking, so it would become an unfavorable state. Thus, in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it says: If there is no ego-grasping in the formless realm, and no pride of "I am," then there will also be the fault of not being afflicted immediately upon obtaining birth in the formless realm. If you say, how can there be the fault of not having a defining word if there is no afflicted mind? If you say that because there is no afflicted mind, there is always ego-grasping, therefore there is a defining word, then this defining word will not abide on any consciousness, because the alaya consciousness and the sense consciousnesses do not have ego-grasping, and the mind consciousness and its retinue do not always think. Thus, in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it also says that there will be the fault of not having a defining word. Why is it said that if there is no afflicted mind, ego-grasping will not arise in all ways? Because, like "I give, I kill, I bathe," ego-grasping is the object of all virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral minds, and that is only possible if there is an afflicted mind, but not if there is not, because if there is no afflicted mind, ego-grasping is associated with non-virtuous minds, so it will not arise simultaneously with virtuous and neutral minds. If there is an afflicted mind, then it will arise in its retinue, and because it is also neutral, there is no contradiction in engaging simultaneously with virtuous and non-virtuous minds. It is also said in the Compendium of the Great

At that time, even for the minds of virtue, non-virtue, and neutral, it is also because of clinging to self that they are contemplated as constantly and universally arising. Otherwise, only non-virtuous minds and their corresponding afflictions will universally arise with the thought of "I," but not for virtuous and neutral minds. Regarding this, some explain that because this has no self-nature, the clinging to self arises constantly, and if there is no ignorance, then it does not exist, and that ignorance only relies on the afflicted mind. The secret meaning is that the clinging to self seems to exist in all virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral minds, which is a delusion caused by subtle parts, mistakenly believing that it exists simultaneously with virtuous and neutral minds. If the afflicted mind is not acknowledged, then the statement that clinging to self only arises in non-virtuous minds is unreasonable. Because, as the Vaibhashika school says, the view of the aggregates of destruction is obscured and neutral. As the Sutra school and one's own school say, the co-emergent clinging to self and the pride of "I" are also obscured and only arise in neutral minds. If so, then two debates are presented. The answer to the first is, if clinging to self does not arise constantly, then how are the virtue and neutrality of ordinary beings tainted? If contemplating the tainted, it will not become tainted because the tainted increases, because when these two minds manifest, the tainted of one's own continuum has ceased, and because it has not arisen and is non-existent, it is impossible to increase something that does not exist. Contemplating other tainted things is also not possible, because external objects are not acknowledged. Merely being the entity of the tainted is also not possible, because then it would also become untainted. Being associated with the seeds of the tainted is also not possible, because then it would also become the path truth. Therefore, if the afflicted mind exists, then because the tainted manifests and exists simultaneously, it can become tainted. The answer to the second is that the non-virtue that produces unwanted results is merely the opposite of virtue. This is how it is explained. The proofs of the afflicted mind have been explained. In the vast explanation of the difficult points of mind and Alaya, called the Ocean of Good Explanations, the explanation of the proofs is the second chapter. Third, refuting the view that there are nine consciousnesses, divided into two, first is the former view: the seventh is the taking consciousness, and the Alaya is divided into three, and the ninth is the stainless consciousness.
