The minds that are always obstructing the seeing of something, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral, arise at all times of arising. Moreover, since this is a mental factor, it must be in accordance with the primary consciousness, and it is a defilement. Since it does not cease until the noble path is born, it is impossible to be together with the alaya consciousness and the six aggregates. Why is this called unmixed? The venerable Emptiness of Essence says that, like the unmixed dharmas of the Buddha, it exists only on the basis of the afflicted mind. Explaining the unmixed basis, the master of Hidden Meaning says that through this, other defilements can be drawn, but others cannot draw this, so it is unmixed, or it is said to be independent and autonomous. In the commentary, it says: Even so, this is in accordance with defilements other than this, such as the view of the perishable aggregate, so unmixed is not established. If you say so, is it not? It is an incompatible establishment, that is, because it is not in accordance with other defilements, it is not considered to be unmixed, so what is it? Because others do not have it, like the eighteen unmixed dharmas of the Buddha. In the Hidden Meaning, it says: Unmixed is ignorance itself, not because it is not in accordance with other root defilements, if it is in accordance with anger and so on, it will also become like that. It is also not the case that it is not in accordance with all defilements and near defilements, because it will become non-existent. Therefore, being in accordance with the root defilements, and also with the aggregates of mind and mental factors other than that, because it is not mixed with other substances, autonomy is unmixed, but not in the sense of uncommon, because being in accordance with other consciousnesses, it will also be in accordance with other consciousnesses, so it will become like that. If this is considered to be concordant and unmixed, if it is established as not mixed with other root defilements, then ignorance that is in accordance with anger and so on will also become unmixed. If it is considered to be not in accordance with all root defilements and near defilements, then such ignorance is impossible. Therefore, unmixed is an autonomous thing that is not mixed with other things.

Because it is the meaning of "having," therefore, for things different from other root afflictions and mind and mental factors, although there is no corresponding co-emergent non-mixture, it is merely considered non-mixture because there is non-mixture with other things. Although other meanings of independence are not discussed here, it will be said below: "That is the afflicted mind, it has ignorance as independent, because by its power it draws attachment and so on that are in accordance with it." Therefore, Tonzhub Khenpo said "things are not mixed," but actually he is saying that power is not mixed. There are two views like this, although it is considered that the second view of Mata and Mati is reasonable, in the self-tradition, it seems reasonable that the basis is not mixed. Because no matter what, by the power of ignorance, other afflictions such as greed will arise, but relying on them, ignorance will also arise. Moreover, the retinues of the afflicted mind are mutual cause and effect, so it cannot be determined that it is only drawn by this. If the afflicted mind does not exist, why would it become a fault different from the five? In the Compendium of the Great Vehicle it says: "How does the existence of the afflicted mind appear? If it does not exist, there will be the fault of non-mixture of ignorance. There will also be the fault of being different from the five, like this, the co-emergent place of the collection of the five consciousnesses is the eye and so on." Here there are two views, the view of Tondrub is that mind consciousness is not only the past basis, but also the entering consciousness, like eye consciousness. The meaning is that for the five sense consciousnesses, there is the past basis, that is, the immediately past mind, and the basis of the five senses that are co-emergent with it, these two, but mind consciousness does not have it, this is unreasonable, because there is no difference in the entering consciousness. The view of the commentary is that this is not what the self-tradition admits, but it is to refute the views of other schools, because the treatises of other schools say that there is no consciousness without a co-emergent place. How to refute it? For those who do not admit the six consciousnesses, because there is no alaya consciousness and afflicted mind, mind consciousness will not exist, because there is no co-emergent basis. Both explanations are not established, if it is said that it is the various holes of the heart, from one to nine, that is unreasonable, because mind consciousness will definitely not become conceptual because of conceptual thought and recollection.
