Know this. The way of desiring what is truly true. Here, the great vehicle masters' views on the number of consciousnesses, whether many or few, are explained according to the teachings of the Chinese master Wen Ze. That is, in the 55th volume of the Great Commentary of the Explanation of Intent, it says: From the Hinayana scriptures, it is said that there are only six consciousnesses, and the seventh and eighth consciousnesses are not mentioned, just as it is taught therein. Here, if combined with the teachings of the Mahayana, there are two explanations. The first is that masters such as Nagarjuna say that there are only six consciousnesses. Therefore, in the chapter "Entering the Nectar of Suchness" from the Madhyamika Heart Essence, written by Master Bhāviveka, it says that apart from the six consciousnesses, there is no other alaya-consciousness, because it is not included in the six consciousnesses of the eye, etc., so it is like a flower in the sky. Therefore, it should be understood that their treatises only establish the six consciousnesses. The second is the treatise of the noble Maitreya, which relies on scriptures such as the Noble Golden Light Sutra to establish the doctrine of the complete eight consciousnesses. Based on these treatises, the Indian masters have three explanations. The first is Master Bodhiruci, who relies on the treatise established as only consciousness to establish two kinds of minds. The first is the mind of dharmata, which is the nature of tathagatagarbha. The nature of tathagatagarbha itself is called mind, but it is not a mind with an object. The second is the corresponding mind, which corresponds to things that arise from mental factors such as faith and desire. It is said that because it is the nature of the mind of only consciousness, it is called mind and consciousness, and there is no contradiction. This is the concluding statement. The second is Master Yangdagdenpa, who relies on the treatise called the "Discriminating Consciousness Treasury" to establish the meaning of the nine consciousnesses, as it is taught in the chapter on the nine consciousnesses. The so-called nine consciousnesses, the six consciousnesses of the eye, etc., are mostly the same as what is said in other treatises.

No. The seventh is the consciousness of taking, the eighth clings to self and what belongs to self, possessing only the obscurations of afflictions, without the clinging to phenomena, so it is certain that one cannot become a Buddha. The eighth is the Alaya consciousness, which also has three aspects. Some say that the first, the self-nature Alaya, possesses the meaning of achieving Buddhahood. The second, the Vipaka Alaya, focuses on the eighteen realms, therefore in the verses of the Madhyantavibhaga-karika, although it does not appear in this translation, it is clear in the Chinese translation: 'The faculties, objects, and the self-image consciousness, arise similarly from them.' Therefore, relying on these treatises and so on, it is said that the eighth consciousness focuses on the eighteen realms. The third, the universally defiled Alaya, focuses on the realm of Suchness, giving rise to four kinds of pride, which is the clinging to phenomena, not the clinging to persons, this is explained in this way based on the treatise of the teacher Blo brtan. The ninth is the stainless consciousness, which is the nature of Suchness. The nature of Suchness has two meanings in one: the first is the object to be focused on, namely Suchness and ultimate reality, etc. The second is the focuser, which is also called the stainless consciousness, also called primordial wisdom, the nine consciousnesses are explained in detail, just as it is said in the chapter on explaining the nine consciousnesses from within the Treasury of Manifest Knowledge. Thirdly, the teacher Xuanzang said that in the Lankavatara Sutra, the eighth is the Alaya consciousness. If that is the case, why is it said in the Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra and other great sections: 'Here a wise man has appeared, consciousness is only six.' In the Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness-Only by the teacher Dharmapala, through metaphorical explanations, it is said: 'The sutra says that consciousness is six, that is the door of consequential meaning.'
