Cognition is looking inward and constantly giving rise to the thought of "I." The cognition of objects is the appearance of forms, sounds, and so on. Therefore, since appearances of outer and inner, clinging to self, and clinging to any of the six objects are apprehended simultaneously, multiple consciousnesses arise at once. This is because it is not possible for one consciousness to have different natures of action. If asked why these four are called actions, it is because they appear as actions of agent and object, since they appear as self and mine. Thus, it is unreasonable for those who do not accept the ālaya, but it is reasonable for those who accept the ālaya. The cognition that appears as outer and inner, as things and sentient beings, is the ālaya itself. The appearance of self is the afflicted mind, the cognition of self. The appearance of objects is, as it says, "The third, for the six objects, whatever is apprehended is those," the six aggregates. Thus, if two consciousnesses cannot arise simultaneously, why is action impossible? Thus, in brief, there are four kinds of action: the cognition of the vessel, the cognition of the place, the cognition of thinking "I," and the cognition of the object. These cognitions are regarded as arising simultaneously in each moment. Because the moment of one consciousness cannot have such different natures of action. So it is said. The sixth reason is: if there is no ālaya, then the experience that arises pervading the body in all cases of proper or improper mind, etc., would be impossible. Because there is no basis for the experience to arise in the body by giving support, it would become the fault of having no seed of cause. Thus, if it is said: If there is no ālaya-vijñāna, why is the experience of the body impossible? Thus, some, whether it is a mind of proper or improper attention, or subsequent discrimination, or a mind in samadhi, or even if the mind is not in samadhi, the arising and apprehension of many diverse appearances is also impossible. Therefore, the ālaya-vijñāna exists. So it is said. The seventh reason is: if there is no ālaya, then the two absorptions are impossible. Thus, without it, the person who enters the two absorptions, his consciousness will abandon the body, then...

L. If it is asserted that the six consciousnesses cease and there is no ālaya-vijñāna, then pointing out the difference between them and death is contradictory to the statement that "his consciousness does not depart from the body." If it is said that because the consciousness of mind is not clear, it will not be separated from consciousness, that is not permissible. If consciousness exists, then the contact of the three aggregates exists; if that exists, then feelings and perceptions exist, therefore the assertion of "cessation of perception and feeling" is unreasonable. If that is the case, even if there is ālaya-vijñāna, since feelings and perceptions are universal, then cessation of perception and feeling is also unreasonable at that time, is it? Indeed, but the perceptions and feelings of the six consciousnesses are coarse, so they must not exist; while the feelings and perceptions of the ālaya-vijñāna are very subtle in terms of object and aspect, so they do not contradict cessation, and there is no fault even if they exist, so they are not the same. Likewise, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, why is the non-perceptual samāpatti impossible? Thus, the consciousness that enters into the non-perceptual samāpatti, if it belongs to the category that will depart from the body, will not depart, therefore it will become the time of death. As the Blessed One said, "His consciousness is not separated from the body." The eighth reason is: if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, death and rebirth are impossible. Thus, if it is asserted that consciousness abandoning the body is death, then if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, it must be the mind-consciousness that abandons it, and if that is the case, the gradual decrease of body temperature is impossible, because it is impossible for mind-consciousness not to arise until the moment of death. Then, the ālaya-vijñāna is also the same, it will not cease until the cessation of life, so it is the same, is it? In the Abhidharmakośa it is said, "The ālaya-vijñāna pervades the entire body." As it is said, because it exists pervading the entire body, when the karmic energy of that ālaya-vijñāna is exhausted, and the ālaya-vijñāna cannot exist in any part of the body, the ālaya-vijñāna is withdrawn from that part of the body, therefore the faculties that depend on it will cease and the temperature will disappear. Through this sequence, all the faculties are abandoned, and the temperature of the entire body will disappear, therefore there will be death and rebirth. While the mind-consciousness pervades the entire body and in every part of the body
