exists within it, and immediately, the cause also acts by being obstructed before itself. So, the simultaneous arising of two consciousnesses is impossible and there is no opportunity. If someone says that this contradicts (the scriptures), it is not contradictory, because it refers to two consciousnesses of the same kind. Even so, why is the initial entry not allowed? If someone says this: If there is the ālaya-vijñāna, then two consciousnesses will arise simultaneously. To these people, it should be said: You are just mistakenly thinking that there is no fault, because two consciousnesses do arise simultaneously. Why? Because some people think that seeing simultaneously extends to consciousness, initially any kind of consciousness cannot arise, because there is no difference between this and the presence of attention, faculties, and objects. That is (the meaning of the scriptures). The third reasoning is: If two consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously, then the manifestation of consciousness will not enter clearly. How is this so? Just as the object taken by the sense consciousness, when the subsequent discriminating consciousness enters, if the object of focus is the past object that the sense consciousness has previously experienced, then the object of the mind's activity of remembering is not clear, therefore it must be considered that the object of the present sense consciousness is clear, therefore two consciousnesses arise simultaneously, and the object of the mind's activity is also clear. If it is not so, then it is impossible for those subsequent discriminating consciousnesses to be clear and unclear. If someone says that even if it is not simultaneous with the sense consciousness, the consciousness with the present object is clear, but not as unclear as the past. That is not allowed, because when both of these consciousnesses enter the object, the self-characteristics of the objects are invisible, and there is no past, and there is no simultaneity, therefore there is no consciousness that clearly grasps the object. Even so, if there is no simultaneous arising of consciousness, why does the manifestation of consciousness that follows along with the eye consciousness and so on not become clear? Just as when the past object that has been experienced is remembered, the object of the mind's consciousness is not clear, but the consciousness of the present object is clear.

It is not unclear like that, therefore it can also arise simultaneously, and consciousness can also appear clearly. So it is said. The fourth reason is: seeds of virtue and non-virtue, etc., should not exist, because there is no Alaya-consciousness. It is not uncertain, because Alaya-consciousness itself is the basis of habits, etc. If you say that the six consciousnesses are the basis of seeds, there is no fault, then it is unreasonable, because when cultivating seeds, the cultivator and the cultivated must arise and cease simultaneously, then they will produce non-virtue under virtue, and vice versa. Similarly, supramundane minds will arise under mundane minds. Furthermore, when the six consciousnesses cease, the Alaya-consciousness, which is the basis of habits, will also cease, so that the minds that arise later will become causeless. Even so, why can't the six consciousnesses be seeds for each other? Because here, non-virtue arises under virtue, virtue arises under non-virtue, and indeterminate arises under both, intermediate realms arise under bad realms, and good realms arise under intermediate realms, similarly, bad realms arise under good realms, contaminated arises under uncontaminated, uncontaminated arises under contaminated, mundane arises under supramundane, and supramundane arises under mundane, these Therefore, it cannot be used as a seed. After the continuum is cut off and a long time has passed, it will also arise after a long time, so it is not possible. So it is said. This explains the five reasons of the Compendium of Mahayana. The fifth reason is: if multiple consciousnesses cannot arise simultaneously, then the consciousness of the container, such as the narrowness of the road, and the consciousness of the place, such as lifting and placing the foot, and the consciousness of "I", and the consciousness of the place, such as the soil and stones beside the road, should not arise at the same time. If you admit it, then these can be clearly manifested when walking fast, etc. Another explanation is: the consciousness of the container is the consciousness that appears as a stable external world. The consciousness of the place is: sentient beings, the six sense bases, together with the basis, appear as the consciousness of the changing world. The consciousness of "I" is:
