It is not because it is the lowest substance. Otherwise, the statement that Arhats and Bodhisattvas above the eighth ground enter into cessation, and that both co-emergent and Alaya consciousness are absent, would become unreasonable. It is also unreasonable to say that the Alaya consciousness does not have the aspect of seeds, because establishing the aspect of Vipaka as Alaya consciousness is also for the purpose of subduing the afflictive mind. As it is said in the Meaning Secret: "Entering into the Vipaka consciousness," saying Alaya consciousness is not pervasive, because for the continuum of Bodhisattvas abiding in the eighth ground and so on, and for the continuum of Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas, there is no Vipaka consciousness, but there is Vipaka consciousness. In the Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata, four possibilities are also stated: The aspect of Alaya consciousness being present and entering into Samadhi consciousness being absent is: the five states of no-mind. The opposite is: the non-learner and non-returning Bodhisattvas in the state of having mind. Both being present is: the state of having mind other than these. Both being absent is: the non-learner and non-returning Bodhisattvas entering into cessation and Nirvana without remainder. The Thirty Verses also say: "From the Arhat himself, there is reversion," therefore, the boundary of no Alaya consciousness that I mentioned earlier should be accepted without any doubt. Therefore, for the eighth consciousness in the continuum of Bodhisattvas who have attained mastery and Arhats, it is called Vipaka consciousness and inconceivable death, so it is called grasping consciousness, but it is not called Alaya consciousness. In this way, for those who have attained mastery and Arhats, it will also become that there is no mind, as it is said: "Why is it also called mind? Because it is the external object accumulated by various seeds of Dharma habits," if you say so, it is not appropriate. The meaning there is that the Sutra says mind, intellect, and consciousness, and speaks of the three natures of mind different from intellect and consciousness, and this can only be established on Alaya consciousness, not on other places. Thus, the meaning of mind must be explained as the accumulation at that time, and Alaya consciousness is the accumulation of all habits, and this meaning is not complete in intellect and consciousness.

If one thinks so, although there are no accumulated habitual tendencies apart from mind and consciousness, there is a mind that contains the meaning of "consciousness that sees meaning in it," because the meaning of mind is not necessarily just accumulating habitual tendencies, and it has not been stated that there are others besides the three or two that establish the ālaya. As it is said in the *Compendium on the Great Vehicle*: "Apart from the ālaya-vijñāna, the third aspect of mind is not found, therefore, the ālaya-vijñāna is proven to be mind itself." Now, let's analyze this issue. Some scholars say that the Hinayana's nirvana without remainder causes the aspect of vipāka to revert, and the Hinayana practitioners hold this view. Does this refer to the assertions of the Hinayana Vaibhāṣika and Sautrāntika schools, or to the views of those who abide on the path of the inferior vehicle of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas? The first is unreasonable, because those two schools of thought do not accept a consciousness other than the six aggregates of consciousness. The second is also not permissible, because if it is necessary to show how they establish the entry and reversion of the ālaya, that cannot be found either. So, whose view is it? The detailed manner of entry and reversion here appears in the treatises of the Yogācāra school. If that is the case, then in the view of the Mahāyāna, is it possible for Hinayana practitioners to completely abandon the jñeyāvaraṇa, because the aspect of vipāka reverts from their nirvana without remainder? There is no fault, because at the time of nirvana without remainder, although the practitioners of the Hinayana path gradually weaken the power of the jñeyāvaraṇa and do not completely abandon it, there is a reversion of the cessation of the jñeyāvaraṇa, because the continuum of the five aggregates will cease. This is not unestablished, because at the time of nirvana without remainder, the arhat abandons the saṃskāra of life, and after that, if consciousness is to arise, it must take rebirth, because karma and kleśas have been completely abandoned, and the aggregates of vipāka produced by them have also disappeared, so there is neither rebirth due to karma and kleśas, nor can a body be formed in the form of karma and kleśas, because this is a completely pacified side, and the basis has disappeared. Therefore, here there is only the sphere of the absence of characteristics, where the elaboration is pacified and the entry of conditioned phenomena has ceased. If that is the case, then the sphere of the absence of characteristics of the Mahāyāna and
