Why is it needed? Because the commentary says that two or three lives will remain. Because there is no choice beyond three lives. The difference in antidotes is: obtaining the antidote to abandoning afflictions previously mentioned—the unconditioned path. The reason why it is not explicitly mentioned in the two lines of the verse "three kinds, four kinds" is that for a stream-enterer who later abandons one kind of affliction, etc., although it is not mentioned that obtaining the antidote to those afflictions—the unconditioned path—can be understood, because without an antidote, it is impossible to abandon afflictions. Moreover, because one is a noble being, the attainment of the unconditioned path will also arise. Even if one abandons with the worldly path, one can still attain the unconditioned, as it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "For the noble, the attainment of separation is twofold." This means that when a noble being abandons afflictions with the worldly path, both the conditioned and unconditioned attainments will arise. Similarly, the Commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge says: "The reason why two are mentioned in the verse is that when a stream-enterer later abandons afflictions, although it is not mentioned that obtaining its antidote—the unconditioned faculty—can be established." Thus, not abandoning the sixth level of what is to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm, abiding in the subsequent awareness of the path, possessing the application of abandoning afflictions, necessarily taking two births in one realm of desire and then passing away, that is a stream-enterer who is a 'family-to-family' (kula-kula). There are two types: a 'family-to-family' of the gods and a 'family-to-family' of humans. The first is: having obtained stream-entry on the basis of any of the six desire realm gods, having been born twice in this way, one passes into nirvana in that first god realm or any of the other five. The second is: having obtained stream-entry on the basis of a place like Jambudvipa (Southern Continent), having been born twice as a human, one is born in that continent itself or in any of the east or west and passes into nirvana. As it is said in the Commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge: "Birth from family to family is of two types: birth from the family of gods is revolving two or three times among the gods, and then completely passing into nirvana in that family of gods or another. Birth from the family of humans is revolving two or three times among humans, and then completely passing into nirvana in that continent or another." What is said is this. This
