What kind of ground is spoken of? It is considered that beings are one. However, if examined according to the literal meaning, then the intermediate state (bardo) would also not exist. Even so, up to the peak of existence (srid pa'i rtse mo), moving upwards, wouldn't it become the eighth existence (srid pa brgyad pa) of beings being born as one? It is said because it is considering the desire realm, so there is no fault. What sutra or reasoning is there to understand this? Among gods and humans, each is born seven times, and in both, it is not seven times. Having said that, what is there to understand this? If it is said that among the gods and humans, will seven times appear? In the Ābhāsvara (光音天, 'od srungs pa), it is also said separately seven times, so do not be too attached to this. Whoever becomes a stream-enterer among humans will come here and be completely liberated from suffering. Whoever becomes a stream-enterer among the gods will also come here and be completely liberated from suffering. This is where it is said. Therefore, in the two ways, the Vinaya (律藏, 'dul ba) commentary considers that the second Buddha will take twenty-eight. In the Abhidharmasamuccaya (摄类学, kun las btus) it is also said, if one clings as one wishes, then what is the seventh time? The stream-enterer himself revolves up and down between gods and humans seven times, thereby obtaining the end of suffering. Therefore, it can be inferred that the elder brother (referring to Asanga) also considers that twenty-eight lives will be taken, because it can be said that gods and humans are separate from each other, and also that birth in the desire realm is generally covered by taking the intermediate state. The seventh time has two: birth and noble. The noble also has definite and indefinite. Even if both situations are born twenty-eight times, because the combination of seven is similar, it is called seven. On the basis of the first obtained, Nirvana is manifested. The treatises of the upper and lower parts confirm the intention of the two venerable ones. This is the concluding verse. The state of abiding in just the fruit of stream-entry has been explained. Where does the particularly distinguished fruit of stream-entry abide? Abiding in the fruit of stream-entry is having the practice of abandoning any of the first to sixth of the desire realm's objects to be abandoned by cultivation (bsgom spang). Among them, there are also those from the lineage of gods.

Birth from kind to kind, birth from human to human. However, the number is not fixed at just that. For example, a person who abides in the fruit of stream-enterer, manifests the once-returner and non-returner fruits, and at that time, after death, there is birth in the upper realms. But birth from kind to kind does not produce the two intermediate fruits in that life, and it is impossible to go to the upper realms. In general, birth from kind to kind requires three distinctions. What are they? As it says in the Treasury: "Freed from three or four kinds, two or three births in the clan." Thus, the distinction of abandoning afflictions, the distinction of the manner of taking birth, and the distinction of obtaining the antidote. Among them, the third of the desire realm's objects of cultivation to be abandoned must be abandoned, and although the fourth is not abandoned, the fifth of the higher realms must not be abandoned. The commentary says that from the abandonment of afflictions, it is because three or four aspects of afflictions are abandoned, therefore three and four are made optional, and two and one are not mentioned. If the fifth is abandoned, then the sixth will also inevitably be abandoned, and one will become a once-returner. In that case, it is impossible to take two births in the same kind of being, and it would be a fallacy of not being born from kind to kind. If that is the case, then even the one who is interrupted as a once-returner, when the eighth is abandoned, the ninth will also inevitably be abandoned, and one will become a non-returner. In that case, one will not become a one-life being. If you say that, it is not the same, because abandoning the ninth of the objects of cultivation to be abandoned requires transcending the realm, which is difficult, while abandoning the sixth is not like that. As it is said in the Treasury Commentary: "Why is it not because the five aspects have been abandoned? Because if that is abandoned, then the sixth will also undoubtedly be abandoned, because one aspect of it, like the one who is interrupted, cannot obstruct the fruit, because it does not transcend the realm." The distinction of the manner of taking birth is that one must definitely take two births in one path of the desire realm, because the meaning of birth from kind to kind is the meaning of repetition or proximity, and also because taking two births twice in different paths of the desire realm also exists in the once-returner. Three births, even if the upper realm is taken, even if the upper realm is not taken, it is the upper realm. The four are definitely not taken.
