Entering the third fruition. (Scripture:) Whoever enters what, at the sixteenth position, attains its fruit. Thus it is said. Here, the former scholars also believe that Stream-enterer has already abandoned attachment beforehand. In the Compendium of Topics, it says: One who has not separated from attachment to desire, having entered into the certainty of truth, will enter the stream. One who has mostly separated from attachment to desire, having entered into the certainty of truth, will become a Once-returner. One who has separated from attachment to desire for desire, having entered into the certainty of truth, will become a Non-returner. Thinking of this meaning, they believe that entering the first and intermediate two fruits of the overcomer are successively Stream-enterer, Once-returner, and Non-returner, which is not reasonable. Because before the path of seeing, the Stream-enterer has already abandoned one to five categories of desire realm afflictions, however, this alone does not become prior separation from attachment, it must be that the specific objects to be abandoned that are not common to any fruition have been abandoned beforehand. And the main object to be abandoned by the Stream-enterer is what is to be abandoned by seeing, which also includes what is to be abandoned by seeing in the peak of existence, therefore it cannot be abandoned by the path of a child. If it is not like that, then it should also be considered that the Arhat has already abandoned attachment beforehand, because some of the objects to be abandoned that are obstacles to the Arhat have also been abandoned before the path of seeing. Moreover, the meaning of the scripture in the Compendium of Topics is not like that either. So what is it? Before that scripture, it says, what is entering the stream? It is the person who is in the sixteenth moment of the mind of the path of seeing. The path of seeing is entering into the certainty of truth, therefore, saying that the one who is in the sixteenth position is the Stream-enterer, then is it thought that all those who first attain the fruit in the sixteenth mind are Stream-enterers? It is not like that, for those who have not completely abandoned the afflictions of the desire realm, entering the path of seeing and obtaining the sixteenth position, are Stream-enterers. Similarly, for those who have abandoned most of the afflictions of the desire realm, that is, those who have abandoned the sixth category and below, and those who have successively abandoned the ninth category of the desire realm, when they enter the path of seeing and obtain the sixteenth position, they successively become Once-returners and Non-returners. That is what is said, not that they are those fruitions before the sixteenth position.

It is not that meaning. In the Abhidharmasamuccaya, it says that in order to manifest the fruit of stream-entry, one enters the stream, and similarly, it is also said for the three fruits of once-returner, non-returner, and arhat. Therefore, the scholar Asanga believes that even those on the path of seeing who abide in the first three fruits are acceptable, because the sixteenth moment is the path of seeing. The Abhidharmakosha masters believe that if it is a path of learning fruit, then it must be pervasive with the path of meditation. Because without obtaining the sixteenth moment, one cannot obtain the fruit. And they believe that the sixteenth moment is the path of meditation. If obtaining the later fruit without abandoning the earlier fruit is considered transcendence, then the instantaneously enlightened arhat would also become transcendent, because without obtaining the non-returner fruit, one obtains the arhat fruit. If you say that, then there is no fault, because we do not consider merely obtaining the later fruit without abandoning the earlier fruit as transcendence. Then what is it? Generally, obtaining the stream-entry fruit is at the sixteenth moment, and later cultivating the path, abandoning the sixth category and obtaining the once-returner fruit, abandoning the ninth category and obtaining the non-returner fruit, this is in accordance with the order. There is nothing, everything is in order, abandoning through the path of meditation, some people have differences in that before the path of seeing, they abandon the sixth and ninth categories, those people immediately obtain the two intermediate fruits upon obtaining the sixteenth moment, those are not in accordance with the order of obtaining the fruits as previously explained, therefore they are considered transcendent, such abandonment does not exist in the instantaneously enlightened, otherwise it would be too extreme, why? Therefore, that accusation is not valid. Then, when the transcendent once-returner fruit-holder later obtains the non-returner fruit, where should that person be placed? This is neither a transcendent fruit nor a gradual fruit. There are also those who believe that abandoning the non-returner first is the once-returner, and abandoning that is considered a gradual fruit, so one should follow whichever one believes in. The Upadhyaya said, in that case, when the Abhidharmakosha speaks of transcendence, mentioning stream-entry is just incidental, at the end of the commentary, it is mostly the form of those who are separated from karma and desire, as well as from attachment (Sanskrit: rāga, raga, meaning: attachment) my gurus.
