The eighth is that from "for a long time" to "descends", and all dharmas like "leaky places" have become cool, because it is said in the sutras that Arhats are cool. Quoting these sutras as evidence, it is asserted that Arhats can also regress. Regarding this meaning, the Sautrantikas in the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha say that even Arhats do not completely regress. They say this, so how can it be understood as reasonable? Through scripture and reasoning. The Second Buddha also holds the view of the Sautrantikas and refutes the wrong views of the Vaibhashikas. Here, the word "also" in the commentary shows not only that the dharmas to be abandoned by the path of seeing, once abandoned, do not completely regress, but also that Arhats do not completely regress. If it is not the first fruit, the once-returner and the non-returner may regress, because they may be attained through the worldly path. The Second Buddha also thinks that the first and last fruits must only be attained through the supramundane path, so they do not regress, while the two intermediate fruits can also be attained by noble ones through the worldly path, so these two fruits may regress, because what is abandoned through the worldly path may revert. This is how it is explained. This meaning is also recognized by the jewel on the crown of the wise, the glorious Dharmakirti, who said in the Pramanavarttika: "That nature and stability, and knowing without remainder, accomplish the Sugata's realization, therefore superior to outsiders, learners, and non-learners." Thus, the Sugata's realization, with knowing that nature, stable knowing, and knowing without remainder, successively surpasses outsiders, learners, and non-learners. "Because suffering does not depend, it is excellent." And "Because the seed of the view of self is abandoned, therefore there is no more returning." And "Because of habituation, all is abandoned." Thus, the Sugata's abandonment has three kinds of excellence: excellent abandonment, non-reverting abandonment, and complete abandonment, successively showing the reason for surpassing outsiders, learners, and non-learners.

Since it cannot be inferred that the abandonment of the (noble) path of learning, if the abandonment of the path of learning does not regress, it cannot be established that there is a difference from the path of learning because the abandonment does not regress. Therefore, both scholars agree that the abandonment of the noble path of learning may regress, but the reasons for the regression are different. The view of the Dharmalakshana school has been explained, while the Lord of Reason believes that if defilements arise again in the continuum after being abandoned, the abandonment will not regress, and defilements are also caused by the view of self. Therefore, as long as the clinging to self is not eradicated, defilements will arise, so learners have not eradicated the clinging to self. That's what they think. Then, what scriptures prove that Arhats do not regress? The sutra says: Monks, whatever is abandoned by noble wisdom is abandoned. Such abandonment, because it no longer produces defilements, is said to be definitely abandoned. The sutra says that for learners, one should be diligent, one should be diligent. But it does not say that for Arhats, one should be diligent. The Dharmalakshana school also says that with three conditions, the subtle attachments of desire in the desire realm will arise, that is, the subtle attachments of desire in the desire realm have not been abandoned, nor have they been fully understood, and the dharmas that are entangled by the desire realm's attachments appear, and there is also improper attention. The sutra says that the arising of defilements requires the aggregation of three conditions. Arhats have abandoned all subtle attachments, so they do not have the cause of arising. What is the reason? If an Arhat has generated the antidote that will never produce defilements, how can he regress? If it has not arisen, and the seeds of defilements have not been eradicated, how can it be said to be exhaustion of outflows? If it is not exhaustion of outflows, how can one become an Arhat? Therefore, Arhats do not regress. Then, what is the meaning of those sutras quoted by the Vaibhashikas? Here it is said that the regression of Arhats is liberation by time, from what does one regress? It is from the samadhi of the fourth dhyana that one regresses, this is the meaning of the sutra. The second sutra also says that one regresses from the fourth dhyana arising from the superior mind, but one never regresses from liberation of mind, so the meaning of the sutra is like this. The meaning of the third sutra is the black category.
