Even if drunk or not drunk, abiding happily in seeing the Dharma, one is not destined to completely fall away, but is destined to tame the senses. Those with the Dharma of non-regression are also like this. From the Abhidharmakośa: What is a person with the Dharma of non-regression? It is those who are naturally endowed with sharp faculties, even if drunk or not drunk, abiding happily in seeing the Dharma, they are not destined to completely fall away. This is distinguished from the perspective of the faculties. Regarding this meaning, the Vaibhāṣikas think like this: For those six Arhats, the differences in characteristics are explained from the perspectives of the faculties, lineage, application (or "union"), and from what they fall away. What is the difference in faculties? The first five have faith as a precursor and are dull in faculties, while the sixth has attainment through seeing as a precursor and is sharp in faculties. As the Abhidharmakośa says: There are said to be six types of Arhats, of which five are born from faith and aspiration. They are united at the time of liberation. Those with the Dharma of non-regression do not regress. Therefore, they are not united at the time of liberation. That arises from the cause of attainment through seeing. So, what is the difference in lineage? Here there are two situations: one is that from the beginning they belong to that lineage, and the other is that from the beginning they do not belong to that lineage, but later become the lineage of that person. Among these, the first situation is present in all six people, and the second situation is present in the latter five. For example, a person with the Dharma of falling away, through taming the senses, becomes the lineage of a person with the Dharma of suicide. Because there is no lineage lower than that of a person with the Dharma of falling away, there is no situation of changing lineage later from practicing an inferior lineage. As the Abhidharmakośa says: Some from the beginning belong to that lineage, some are transformed from practice. So, what is the difference in application? The Abhidharmakośa commentary says: The first two only continuously unite in the stage of previous learning, without respectfully uniting. The third is one who continuously unites. The fourth is one who respectfully unites. The fifth is one who unites in both ways, but is dull in faculties. The sixth is one who unites in both ways and is sharp in faculties. It is as it is said. Respectful union is continuous intense diligence, while continuous union is intense effort.

It is the continuous diligence without laziness. How does one fall back from something? Like this, if one falls back from any of these six, then the first five will fall back. From what does one fall back? From the two, fruit and lineage. Among them, one does not fall back from the first lineage and the first fruit. Among them, the first lineage has already been explained. The first fruit, if it is like gradually obtaining the fruit, is the Stream-enterer. If it is like the Sudden Attainer, it becomes the first fruit of the Once-returner and the Non-returner. Therefore, an Arhat attained by the Sudden Attainer may fall back from the fruit, but will not fall back from the first three fruits. This is because their abandonment is stabilized by both the Path of the Child and the Path of Transcendence. The Gradual One falls back from the Arhat and becomes a Non-returner because higher realm afflictions arise in the continuum. If the seventh affliction of the desire realm arises, one becomes a Once-returner. If afflictions below the sixth arise, there are cases where one becomes a Stream-enterer, but from the Stream-enterer, neither the Sudden Attainer nor both will fall back, because the seen abandonments are the root of the fabricated ego-grasping, and the Noble Ones directly realize the fabricated selflessness, therefore afflictions without a basis for ego-grasping do not arise, so the abandonment of the Stream-enterer does not revert. The basis of the cultivated abandonment, such as the repulsive object and the non-repulsive object of anger, exists in the object, so afflictions arise focusing on those, therefore the abandonment of the cultivated abandonment reverts. There is this distinction in falling back from the lineage: one who has the nature of falling back can transform into a higher lineage, but there is no falling back to a lower one, because there is no lineage lower than that. The reason for not falling back from the first lineage is also because from the beginning, one has been familiar with that lineage for a long time in both the Path of Learning and the Path of No More Learning, therefore it has become stable. Later, after attaining Arhatship, the lineage of one who has the nature of falling back, who trains the senses and thinks of death, is because it has not been stabilized by the two paths. The way of falling back from something is like this, as it is said in the Treasury: "Four fall back from lineage, five from fruit, not from the first." In the explanation of "not from the first," the first fruit is only the Stream-enterer.
