Finished. What is obtaining peace in the present dharma? It is the non-returner who attains parinirvana in the body he has attained. As the *Abhidharmakośa* says: 'Others attain parinirvana in this.' That is it. However, there is no reason why those who attain Arhatship in the body in which they first attained Stream-enterer and Once-returner should not also be established as peace in the present dharma. What is it to realize with the body? The *Compendium of Topics* says: 'What is it to realize with the body? It refers to those who are learning and meditating on the eight liberations.' Thus, it means that the non-returner is able to enter into the samadhi of the eight liberations. Thus, these distinctions of the non-returner are also not applicable to the non-returner who has exhausted his life in the desire realm, because one who has exhausted his life in the desire realm cannot go to the higher realms. The commentary says: 'Why do non-returners who have exhausted their lives also have these distinctions?' It says: 'No.' Thus, the *Abhidharmakośa* says: 'The noble ones who have exhausted their lives in the desire realm do not go to other realms.' It means that the noble ones who have exhausted their lives in the desire realm do not go to other realms, because in that life they attain the fruit of non-returning and attain complete parinirvana. The meaning of exhausting life in the desire realm is also explained in the commentary: 'The non-returner who has exhausted his life is one who, in his first life, attains the fruit of Stream-enterer or Once-returner, and in his second life becomes a non-returner.' Thus, it means that one who has attained any of the first two fruits and dies, and in the next life attains non-returning, is said to attain parinirvana in that body, so it is harmful to say that one is born from lineage to lineage and exhausts his life in the desire realm. Thus, the meaning of the non-returner who has exhausted his life in the desire realm is like that. In general, the noble one who has exhausted his life in the desire realm is one who practices the noble dharma in two lives, and it is clear that he must attain parinirvana in that life. What is the difference between not only saying that life is exhausted, but also saying that it is in the desire realm, when one does not go to other realms? The commentary says: 'If one has exhausted his life in the form realm, then it is also possible to be in the formless realms, that is, to go to the end of the peak of existence, where one transmigrates to the higher realms.' That is how it is. Thus, Indra is a Stream-enterer.

Therefore, it is unreasonable to make a prayer in the presence of the Teacher, saying, "May I, having passed away from this life and taken rebirth as a human, if I do not attain Nirvana at the final moment of death, and if I am completely ruined by the failure to attain Arhatship, may I be born in Akanistha." For even though the gods of the desire realm rely on the excellent Dharma and have a lifespan of two lifetimes, it is also shown that they enter the form realm. If you, the Vaibhashikas, say that Indra made such a prayer because he did not understand the Abhidharma, that is also unreasonable, because if that were the case, the Teacher should have prevented him from saying such a thing, but he did not prevent him. If asked, the Vaibhashikas answer this by saying that Indra spoke in that way because he wanted to abandon the suffering of the desire realm, and the Teacher did not prevent him in order to make him happy. The commentary says, "Then, what is the meaning of what Indra said in the Sutra of Indra with Melodies: 'Having died and transmigrated from here, if I do not pass away in the support of a human, if I am ruined at the end, may I be born in the place known as Akanistha'?" The Vaibhashikas say that it is because he does not understand the Abhidharma, and the Blessed One did not prevent him in order to make him truly happy. This is what is said in the scriptures. The answer of the Kashmiri teacher Sangharakshita is given in the commentary: "The teacher Sanghabhadra says that being disgusted with the suffering of rebirth, which has the cause of death and transmigration, is something that should be truly rejoiced in." It is said that Indra was disgusted with repeatedly passing away from life and taking rebirth, and the Teacher did not prevent him in order not to discourage him. However, this appears to be unreasonable, because the teacher only said, "The Vaibhashikas say this in response to that argument," and did not say anything more. If Indra said that because he did not understand the Abhidharma, the Teacher should have refuted him, because it is unacceptable to make assertions that contradict the Teacher's teachings merely to make Indra happy. Moreover, for Indra, it is not necessary to pass away from life and be reborn in another realm, because it is shown that he can attain liberation in this very life, which would also make him happy. Previously, it was thought to be contradictory to the fact that beings in the desire realm do not go to another realm after the end of their lives, and that it is shown that liberation can be attained in this very life. Therefore, the Vaibhashikas
