The explanation for non-returners and once-returners is also discussed, although the commentary at the time did not explicitly state it, it can be understood as reasonable. Because it is said (in the sutras) that in the second stage, it is impossible for those who have transcended, the returners and non-returners, to fall back. In the sixth stage, it is also said, "If one returns because of attaining the first fruit, then in most cases, one will also be free from attachment to karma and also be free from attachment to desire." These statements are in perfect agreement. Just as it is said in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa, "There are three types of those who are subject to falling away: either they abide in their position and completely pass into nirvana, or they transform their faculties, or they completely fall away and become learners. There are four types of those who contemplate death: the same three as above, and those who return as a type of those who are subject to falling away. Similarly, for the other three, add one each, and it should be known that they are five, six, and seven in order." This is how the classification is done. Furthermore, in the same treatise, it is said, "Those who are subject to falling away are definitely not those who will fall away, nor will they attain enlightenment even among those who have the potential for realization, but because there is a possibility (of falling away), it is said that way." In this way, even in the three realms, there can be six types of Arhats, which is the view of the Vaibhāṣikas. From then on, according to the view of those who will definitely fall away, up to those who will transform until direct realization, there are six in the desire realm. In the form and formless realms, there are two who are immovable and unchangeable from their abiding, because there is no falling away, contemplation of death, or transformation of faculties there. This statement is consistent with the Collected Topics, because they consider the Dharma of falling away, etc., to be definite. Here, if one asks what reason the Vaibhāṣikas saw that led them to believe that Arhats would fall away, the sutras say, "With five conditions and five causes, an Arhat who is liberated in time will completely fall away. What are the five? Namely, entering the boundary of activities, entering speech, entering disputes, engaging in long journeys, and being afflicted by prolonged illness."

Sa. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, I say that even an arhat can be obstructed by gain and respect. The Venerable Ānanda asked: Blessed One, for what reason do you say this, Ānanda, I say that even an arhat can be obstructed by gain and respect? The Blessed One replied: Ānanda, it is not an obstruction to obtain what has not been obtained, to realize what has not been realized, and to manifest what has not been manifested. However, for those who have already attained the four meditative states arising from superior mind, abiding in ease in the visible Dharma, it is possible that they may completely fall away from this, I say this because they are still in a mixed state. For those who are not mixed, who abide diligently and perseveringly, I do not say that they will completely fall away from the liberation of mind realized by the body, in any way. Ānanda, therefore, you should train in this way, to overcome gain and respect. Ānanda, you should train in this way, not to let the mind be bound by gain and respect. It is said in the sutra that for those who are unmoved, falling away is absolutely impossible, and it is specifically pointed out that arhats who are liberated by time can fall away. Furthermore, it is said in the sutra: The Venerable Black Assembly Arhat can fall away. Also, in the Sutra of the Charcoal Pile, it is said: A noble disciple who possesses learning, who practices in this way, who abides in this way, only one in a hundred will generate sinful, unwholesome thoughts due to loss of mindfulness. The sutra also shows that arhats can fall away. If a noble disciple generates an unwholesome thought, then he is not learning, because in that sutra it is said that those who have mastered it, who have long been devoted to mental seclusion, are described as tending towards nirvana, and in other sutras, these are called the powers of arhats. The sutra says: Venerable, what is the power of a bhikkhu arhat, one who has exhausted the defilements? Shariputra, the power of a bhikkhu arhat
