There is no need to connect in the state of becoming, because that would be an extreme passing away in the bardo. There is also no need to pass away on the support of the form realm, because that would be an extreme going to the end of existence. Some Tibetans who think that those who have already connected in the state of birth and the intermediate state of the form realm also want to approach form, this is because they have not distinguished the subtle intention of the scriptures with their own coarse application of intelligence. That will be explained as the occasion arises. Approaching form also has three aspects: passing away in the bardo, passing away after being born, and transferring upwards. What is passing away in the intermediate state? Those who approach form, except for the intermediate state of the Great Brahma of the form realm, in any of the sixteen intermediate states, the support of connection itself attains nirvana. There are also three types: fast, not fast, and passing away after a long time. These are also the three ways of passing away immediately after being born in the intermediate state, in the middle of life, and at the end of life, respectively. As it is said in the commentary on the Treasury: "For a while, completely passing away in the intermediate state is because of three examples: fast, not fast, and completely passing away after a long time." What is being said? What are the three examples? A spark of morning fire dies as soon as it is formed, a spark of fire struck by a blacksmith's hammer rises into the sky and dies on its return, and a hot spark of iron rises into the sky and dies before it falls to the ground after returning. These three are respectively the three examples of passing away in the intermediate state, which appear in the Sutra Showing the Seven Progressions of Holy Persons. According to the view of Master Asanga, the way of establishing the three ways of passing away in the intermediate state is: first, at the same time as the intermediate state is formed, the path is manifested, the remaining to be abandoned are abandoned, and nirvana is attained; second, when the intermediate state is formed and the desire to go to the state of birth has not yet arisen; third, when the intermediate state is formed and one wants to go to the place of birth, the path is manifested and nirvana is attained. They hold that although these people have abandoned the afflictions of actually being born in the god realms of the form realm, they are born in the intermediate state because they have not abandoned the afflictions of forming the intermediate state. In the Compendium of Abhidharma Samuccaya, it says: "Temporarily completely in the intermediate state"

Liberation from Suffering What is liberation from suffering? It is abandoning all connections to birth, but not abandoning the connections to manifest accomplishment. When the state of the intermediate realm manifests, if the path manifests, one can attain the end of suffering. Or, when the state of the intermediate realm manifests, if one does not contemplate entering the state of birth, and if the path manifests, one can attain the end of suffering. Or, after manifesting contemplation, one enters the state of birth, and if the state of birth is not attained, and if the path manifests, one can attain the end of suffering. This is what is said. What is liberation after birth? It is approaching the form realm, and in whichever of the sixteen abodes of the gods of the form realm, the basis of the first birth itself attains nirvana there. Here, there are also three situations: liberation from mere birth, without manifest effort, and with manifest effort attaining complete nirvana. The differences between these are explained in order in the commentary. Therefore, because of the differences in manifest diligence and so on, the differences in complete nirvana are explained. For complete nirvana after birth, there are both manifest diligence and the spontaneous arising of the path. For complete nirvana with manifest effort, there is manifest diligence, but there is no spontaneous arising of the path. For complete nirvana without manifest effort, neither is present; there is neither manifest diligence nor the spontaneous arising of the path. Thus, the differences and order of these three, showing first those with effort and then those without effort, is the view of the Vaibhashikas, so the Second Buddha disapproved of that view, saying that is how it is known. His own view is that in the commentary, the sutra states that complete nirvana without manifest effort occurs first, so just like that, the spontaneous and non-spontaneous arising of the path are through the means of no effort and attainment through effort, because non-manifest effort and manifest effort are to be accomplished. Complete nirvana after birth is the most spontaneous arising of the path, the greatest, and the most subtle in its details. Thus, it speaks of liberation in the intermediate state.

Third, the three from birth to nirvana and the upward transfer, that is, in the Sutra Showing the Seven Conducts of the Holy One, it says that nirvana without effort precedes nirvana with effort, so the order is according to the system of that sutra, and the difference is that without relying on strong effort, the path naturally arises is without effort, and the opposite of this is with effort. Then, what is the difference between without effort and nirvana immediately after birth? Nirvana immediately after birth is that the Dharma of the path arises naturally, what is to be abandoned is extremely small, while without effort and with effort, etc., are not like that. Thus, it is also said in the Compendium of Topics: What is complete nirvana after birth? That is, in both, without abandoning all bonds, merely being born in the realm of form, one realizes the path and obtains the end of suffering. What is complete nirvana without effort? That is, after birth, without effort, one realizes the path and obtains the end of suffering. What is complete nirvana with effort? That is, after birth, through effort, one realizes the path and obtains the end of suffering. The order and the difference between these three are the same in the views of the brothers. Therefore, that is reasonable, because without effort and with effort are showing the way those people attain nirvana, without relying on great effort, the path arises in the continuum, in order to quickly attain nirvana. Therefore, in the Ornament for Clear Realization, it says: "With action and without action, they do not go to the lower realms." This should be understood as being done merely for the sake of poetry. Here, some Abhidharma masters say that attaining nirvana with the path that focuses on suffering, origin, and path truths is nirvana with effort, because of nirvana with the path that focuses on conditioned things born from causes and conditions. Attaining nirvana with the path that focuses on cessation truth is nirvana without effort, because of nirvana with the path that focuses on unconditioned things not born from causes and conditions. This statement is unreasonable, because if that were the case, it would also lead to the nirvana of the intermediate state beings, because they also attain nirvana with the path that focuses on the four truths.
