When Asanga explains how particular sentient beings take birth, what fault is there if craving and so on are placed before name and form to understand the meaning of the sutra? If one does not understand the key points of the sutra as understood by the teacher, then the Vaibhashikas and the people of the Land of Snows (Tibet) will understand it literally, and thus will not be able to clearly explain the sutra and its meaning as explained by the teacher. Second, in the Madhyamaka Root of Dependent Arising, it says, "The first, eighth, and ninth are afflictions, the second and tenth are karma, and the remaining seven are suffering." Thus, three are afflictions, two are karma, and seven are the pervasive afflictions of birth. In the Compendium of Topics, it is said that consciousness is the pervasive affliction of karma, which refers only to the fact that consciousness at the time of the cause holds the karmic imprints. Third, in the Compendium of Topics, it is said that the earlier limbs cause the four conditions for the later limbs as appropriate. That is, it is assumed that consciousness acts on consciousness, but it is not certain. If it produces form, it is only the dominant condition, and form to consciousness is both that and the objective condition, and to form it is both the causal and dominant conditions. In the first case, for example, in terms of how ignorance causes the mental formation of thought, mental formations arise from the imprints of ignorance, and by the force of its projection, it causes it to be continuous, and in a state of delusion, it engages in focusing on what is not supreme as supreme, and due to its power, those that arise in conjunction with it reverse the object. Therefore, it acts sequentially from the causal condition to the dominant condition, and others should be applied in the same way. It is not contradictory to say in the Compendium of Vehicles that it only acts as the dominant condition, because that is in terms of certainty, while the Compendium of Topics is in terms of possibility. It is also not contradictory to say that the earth element performs three functions other than the causal condition, because that is in terms of the ultimate causal condition, the alaya itself, while in the Compendium of Topics it is done in terms of the conventional causal condition. Fourth, there are two functions, similar and dissimilar. The first is that the earlier limbs produce the later limbs. The second is, in the Discrimination of the Middle and Extremes, it says, "For the sake of obscuring and planting, for the sake of leading and completely holding, for the sake of perfecting and cutting off three."
