The meaning of 'a tsal ba' is: In the Compendium of Topics, what is its nature? Because it arises from immutable conditions, arises from impermanent conditions, and arises from potent conditions. These three statements explain the three terms of the sutra. That is, firstly, when external and internal phenomena arise, they are not made by anyone after prior consideration, but generally, if there are causes and conditions, the result will arise. Secondly, although there is a cause, it does not arise from permanent conditions, but arises from impermanent conditions. Thirdly, it arises from conditions and is impermanent, but not all results arise from all causes, but arises from causes that are in accordance with and possess the power to produce their respective results. This shows that in addition to belonging to the lineage, it is also based on the dependent origination of both, showing that it possesses three characteristics. The second part is divided into two: classification and summary. The first is: the twelve links from ignorance to old age and death, which is based on internal dependent origination. What is the nature of these? Generally, ignorance is divided into two types: afflicted and non-afflicted, but the second type is also manifestly possessed by arhats, so it is not suitable as the root of taking rebirth in samsara, so it is the first type. This is further divided into two types: ignorance of the law of karma and the ultimate truth, which is also the cause of arousing the three actions (body, speech, and mind). How does this become the cause of arousing actions? Because when one is ignorant of the nature of the aggregates that are merely dependent origination, one will grasp at self, and will therefore be attached to self. When one is particularly attached to self, one will want oneself to be happy and not want to suffer. Among them, wanting oneself to be happy only in this life will lead to engaging in non-virtuous deeds, becoming the non-meritorious cause of bad destinies; wanting to be happy in the next life will lead to practicing the ten virtuous deeds, becoming the meritorious cause of gods and humans; mainly craving the equanimity of happiness that is free from the suffering of the change of happiness and suffering will lead to entering into meditative absorption and the formless realms, thereby manifesting the immutable karma that is the cause of the higher realms. Thus, the root of creating the three karmas is ignorance. So, how does ignorance initiate which karma? In the Compendium of Topics, it says, there are two types of ignorance: result.
