Now, abandoning the seven contaminated and seven uncontaminated, the two going and coming of abandoning each one individually are the near practice. From the contaminated first dhyana to the uncontaminated third dhyana, and from the contaminated realm of space to the uncontaminated realm of nothingness, and returning in that manner, is the actual practice, going to the third stage by alternating between contaminated and uncontaminated types. Arhats of the three continents with male and female faculties do not enter through occasional unions; isn't it said that such a thing is a sudden transcendence? If such a sudden transcendence is permissible, these two have the same name of sudden transcendence but different meanings, just as the first 'yasa' of 'vayas' has the same sound, but the meanings of crow and milk porridge are different. The third has three: preliminary practice, actual practice, and summary of meaning. The first is: gone and come. To where? To the four dhyanas, the four formless realms, and the nine samapattis of cessation. By what basis? By the bodhisattvas who are on the path of meditation. In what manner? In two ways, according to the Dharma and not according to the Dharma. What is that? Having gone from the first dhyana up to cessation, and then having come from cessation up to the first dhyana, that is how it is. This is the explanation of the first two lines. The second has two: going and coming. The first has two: not alternating cessation and alternating going. The first is: the preliminary practice is taught in accordance with the Dharma, so it is not mentioned separately, because there is no other kind. Great ones, considering that going and coming in two ways, according to the Dharma and not according to the Dharma, and then separating them to explain this, is not explained in the sutras, and it is not permissible for obtaining meaning, nor is it a joke of explanation. Because all of these explain the two goings and comings. The second is: because the word "from then on" has a remainder, what should be done from then on? Not only those previously entered, but also entering the first dhyana again, and after rising from there, entering cessation. Similarly, alternating each samapatti and cessation, until entering the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. After rising from there, entering cessation, and after rising from there, immediately focusing on the peak of existence of the samapatti previously entered.
