As for that: upwards are eight samadhis, and downwards are nine. The second is: cessation and desire, which are the ultimate of quiescence and non-quiescence, so if one can alternate between these two, it is considered easier to alternate with others. The third is: upwards alternate cessation, and outwards alternate desire. Therefore, it is unreasonable to divide into twenty places. Otherwise, upwards alternating cessation and cessation is not allowed, and downwards it is cut off that alternating desire with it is allowed. If one considers this to be the view of the noble ones, it is also unreasonable, because the sutra says that in both the actual going and coming, one enters the nine samadhis. If one says that upwards one must enter the cessation of the peak of existence, because from the cessation that alternates with the peak of existence, the reduction to the peak of existence is small. Because one cannot be satisfied with cessation from cessation, it is for the sake of entering the cessation of the peak of existence. Then, why is it not enough to reduce the peak of existence? Because after the peak of existence, one must also manifest desire. Therefore, at the time of purification or for some individuals, although one can be satisfied with desire from cessation, just as guiding the eight limbs downwards. However, due to the differences of some individuals, or when one first arises without having arisen before, one cannot be satisfied with desire from the extremely quiescent state of cessation, so it is clearly shown to reduce the peak of existence, and the views of the two sutras are like that. Then, why only alternate cessation upwards and only alternate desire downwards? Because those who have power are satisfied with entering joy, so it is thought that this is only symbolic. Thus, as explained by the noble ones, the two verses of Simharaksha are summarized by the first two lines of this treatise, and the commentators Sherdron and others also follow this view. Moonlight and Thubgong, although they want to follow the view of the noble ones, like Daknying, say that the two verses of combination are summarized by the previous treatise, so they have not understood the view of the noble ones. Therefore, from there going out, the first time there are nine places, the second time there are seventeen places, and coming back there are eighteen places, and if one says that the view of the noble ones is different from this, it is unreasonable to say that the distinctions made by Sengge Sangpo are unreasonable. Although one has not even seen the sutra words quoted in Sunlight, it seems like one is proclaiming that one is the truth because of jealousy.

Furthermore, it does not abide in the thoughts of the noble ones. Śānti divides the nine meditative absorptions that include cessation into two types: two are going, and one is coming. The first is: until cessation, that is, taking cessation as the end, it is the sequential practice of the nine meditative absorptions. The second is: from the first dhyāna that includes cessation to the peak of existence, transcending from one to eight sequentially, limited by the non-samāhita consciousness belonging to the desire realm, that is, reaching the ultimate with this. That is, rising from the cessation that is connected to the peak of existence, to the peak of existence, rising from there to cessation, and then abiding in the non-samāhita mind, there are nineteen abodes in this. Why approach the peak of existence here? Because when going upwards in this way, it is necessary to enter the final cessation, and if other consciousnesses do not appear, then after each of the eight samāpattis there is entry into cessation, so it will become rising from cessation to cessation. This is unreasonable, because the nature of cessation is without mind, so there cannot be a thought of rising. Therefore, due to the power or reason of not being able to enter cessation, and because the peak of existence is the closest, there is a slight approach to the peak of existence. In the heart essence, there is no difference from Abhidharma. The third is: the nine meditative absorptions that include cessation and the nine types of desire realm mind alternate and come. It is different from the two verses "belonging to the desire realm." These two verses also apply to this. The different meaning is the alternation of samāhita and non-samāhita. In this way, between approaching the peak of existence and the final desire realm mind, there is a sutra of entering cessation. The two connected combinations are considered not included in this treatise. Because there is doubt about writing the sutra that both going and returning have the final cessation, and the meaning of "two types" is also inappropriate, so I follow the views of the noble ones and the teachers. The second is: In the Abhidharmakośa it says: "Eight grounds divided into two are related, one transcends and returns, categories are different as the third, it is the samāpatti of transcendence." That is, dividing the eight grounds of the form realm and formless realm into two types: eight with outflows and seven without outflows, and then alternately going and returning to these two respectively in accordance with and not in accordance with the method, these two are long-term combinations. Related means going and returning sequentially. Then there is the worl
