That is to say, by means of the sign (hetu), and the analysis of causes with the Vajra-kaṇa (diamond sliver), and the analysis of results with the fourfold arising and ceasing (catuṣkoṭika-utpāda-nirodha), etc., the lack of inherent existence is established by the reasoning of dependent origination. The Clear Words states: There is no entity that is reasonably existent in the ultimate sense, because it is not established by valid cognition and scriptures possessing definitive meaning, etc. This is the self-established system. And, the establishment of valid cognition as reasonable, and from within the "etc.", relying on the three types of reasoning: action, agent, and the nature of phenomena, and the establishment of the other's system of quoting scriptures, both of these I do not see as fitting with this treatise. If one asks, how is it established by those reasonings? The first is: In the ultimate sense, being separate from one and many pervades the lack of inherent existence. For example, like an image. These entities are also separate from one and many, which is the non-apprehension of the pervader. The Ornament of the Middle Way states: These entities asserted by self and others, in reality, are separate from the nature of one and many, therefore, they lack inherent existence like an image. The second is: Whatever does not arise in the ultimate sense from self, other, both, and without a cause, does not have true arising. For example, like a rabbit's horn. These entities are also separate in the ultimate sense from arising from self, other, both, and without a cause, which is the non-apprehension of the pervader. The Root Verses on the Middle Way state: Not from self, not from other, not from both, not without a cause. Whatever entities, wherever, never have arising. Among these, it does not arise from self, because, that very text states: If the cause and effect are one, the agent and the action become one. Like father and son, fire and smoke, seed and sprout, etc., would become one. It does not arise from other in the ultimate sense, because, that very text states: If the cause and effect are other, the cause and non-cause become the same. Just as the seed is considered the cause of the sprout, so too would coal become its cause, because there is no difference in merely being other, and if one analyzes a specific other, it cannot be established, because it is the same as what is to be proven. It does not arise from both, because, it would become a fault to assert each one, and since the two are contradictory, it is impossible. It also does not arise from no cause, because

It is too extreme to aim at things like a crow also showing the bright colors of a peacock's feathers, and fire also showing the cold nature of water. Or the peacock does not show its feathers, and the water does not show coldness. If it arises without a cause, it must exist in all places and times, or it must be completely non-existent. Third, if existence, non-existence, both, and neither, do not arise in the ultimate sense, then the result pervades the non-arising of truth, like the son of a barren woman. These things also do not arise as existence, non-existence, both, or neither in the ultimate sense. As the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness says: Existence does not arise because it exists. Non-existence does not arise because it does not exist. Existence and non-existence are not because the dharmas are incompatible. Because there is no arising, there is no abiding or ceasing. This also establishes the subject-property of that syllogism. Fourth, whatever is dependent origination has no self-nature in the ultimate sense, like an illusion. All dharmas are also dependent origination. As the sutra says: Whatever arises dependently, those things have no self-nature whatsoever. Although it is possible to examine how these reasons are refuted and established by the wishes of each side, and whether the consequentialist school applies the autonomous syllogism, I have not written it because I am afraid of the large number of letters. The second is the second of that result, refuting the great Bodhi that is imputed by conceptualization. The second part has two parts: refuting the tenets of those who assert things, and establishing the tenets of those who assert emptiness. The first part has two parts: not observing the pervasion, and refuting by contradictory commitments. The first part has three parts, the first part is: For those who assert things, that consciousness is not non-mistaken, or it is not suitable to become great Bodhi, this was said with an intervening phrase. Then what kind of consciousness do they think knows exhaustion and non-arising? Those who assert things, when the defilements that have already arisen are exhausted by the path, the consciousness that thinks that those defilements are exhausted in my continuum is the consciousness that knows exhaustion; when the defilements that will arise are made not to arise by the path, the consciousness that thinks that defilements will not arise in my continuum in the future is said to be the consciousness that knows non-arising, and that is what they think. Not only do they think that these two consciousnesses are like this, but they also declare and think that Bodhi is also like this, knowing exhaustion and non-arising.
