Thus, having explained the second grasping thought, the object-grasped thought, the first grasping thought, the substance-grasping thought, is explained. The second has two aspects. The object is 'sentient beings are imputed,' and so forth, with 'etc.' added to the end of the nine. 'Object of activity' means that which appears as the object of thought, that is, to all. These are also included in the three: object, subject, and path. The first includes two: suchness and selflessness; the second includes one; the third includes two: the noble path and the path of ordinary beings. The first includes two made by the wisdom of the great and small vehicles, and two made by means. The second includes two: impure view and conduct. The essence is that for these, this is the one who grasps the nature of substance, so it should be known that thought is the first grasping thought. The antidote is directly shown in the sutra, and this is shown indirectly from the opposite. These four ways of teaching are similar. The third has three: the essence of thought, the way of grasping, and the antidote. The first is: the basis of division for the first grasping thought. The nature of the division is nine aspects. The reason for the division is that there are nine objects. Among these, wherever gods and humans, etc., are referred to as sentient beings and persons, they are merely imputed on the aggregates, because if sentient beings and persons existed substantially, they would not be reborn in samsara. If self, sentient being, life, or person is not observed, how can the realm of self, the realm of sentient being, and the realm of person be established? Like eye and form, etc., which are referred to as objects and subjects, are merely imputed, because there is no meaning apart from mind, so it is only its appearance. As it says in the sutra: 'When the great bodhisattva practices the Prajnaparamita, should he not study form?' Thus, because all learning that closely observes the Dharma is prohibited, it is said. The Dharma of omniscience, etc., is not empty in essence in name, because it goes to all objects and subjects, that is, because it is pervasive. As it says in the sutra: 'Seeing that all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, one should study non-attachment.' Thus it is said. Nyisang and Leygyema explain that the thought that realizes that dharmas are not empty of their own characteristics is non-emptiness in the way of grasping. The Dharma of omniscience, etc., although explained in the three Dharmas of realization, white, and knowledge, generation of mind, etc., in short, because the sutra says that everything from form to omniscience is empty, it holds the end of the explanation.

Attachment to phenomena such as form, i.e., clinging, is a stage on the path, because manifest clinging to what is grasped, etc., in all forms has not been abandoned. If a Bodhisattva does not cling to the object of focus, nor does he cling to the non-object of focus, then how does one completely perfect the stages from ground to ground by practicing the Great Mother (Prajnaparamita)? Thus it is said. Thoroughly distinguishing phenomena as non-objective means realizing that forms, etc., are without inherent existence. If it becomes an object of focus up to unsurpassable perfect enlightenment, then one should not thoroughly distinguish phenomena in that way. Thus it is said. This distinction made through manifest clinging, and the first two as well, if understood from the perspective of real existence, would lead to a meaning contrary to the sutras. Although this could be reconciled, the teacher explains it differently because clinging to either abandonment or cultivation is shown to be conceptual thought. This principle should be understood in all such cases. Accomplishing specific tasks by focusing on the aggregates as real entities means not cultivating the path like an illusion for the sake of three great purposes, because one does not practice the Great Mother for any reason. Thus it is said. The way to ultimately bring forth the source of arising through the three vehicles is by not focusing on forms, etc., as signs. Then how can these three vehicles—the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, and the Great Vehicle—be distinguished? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, there is no object of focus for any distinction made among phenomena that are unmade and unmanifest. Thus it is said. Offering is impure because it is not a field of merit, because one has not truly and thoroughly entered through the means of directly realizing without the elaboration of clinging to form. Offering to the Tathagata and offering to the emanation of the Tathagata are so important and so beneficial. Subhuti, in this way, the dharmata of phenomena is firm; one should understand that there is no difference between the Tathagata and the emanation of the Tathagata. Thus it is said. Confusing the practice of the Mother, i.e., clinging to differences and distinguishing, is because giving, etc., are established by focusing separately on the subject and the nature of phenomena. One should not confuse by saying, "This is the Mother, and this is the nature of the Mother."
