If one clings to entering as if to a mother, it is a fault in the Great Vehicle, so it is proper to examine it. The discriminations that do not understand the extensive sutras such as the "Sunlight Sutra" and the "Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra," and that are not taught by the Buddha, and that do not have the qualities of the three paths, and that do not understand these three, are said to be antidotes to these, as stated in the sutras. The second is: Because it is to be abandoned in this stage of approximation, when the peak of the path of meditation has been attained but not yet fully perfected, it is something that is to be abandoned in the object of the stage of application of the path of meditation. The second has three parts. The first is: Thus, after the first apprehended discrimination has been shown, the second apprehended discrimination, the negation, the apprehended discrimination, is spoken of. The second has three parts. The object is: "Mind does not arise," etc., with "etc." added to the end of each, there are nine. These also include the paths of accumulation, application, seeing, meditation, and no-more-learning of the Lesser Vehicle, and the seven that are the opposite of these and that are mistaken about the object, with two each for the first two and one each for the others. The essence is: The second apprehended discrimination that clings to the idea that these are what I should negate. The antidote is: Something that is to be abandoned in the object of the stage in which the mind and mental factors that exist on the path of meditation enter. The third has two parts: The essence of discrimination and the antidote. The first is: The basis of the second apprehended discrimination's negation, the basis of division, and the nature of division are nine aspects. The reason for doing so is: Because there are nine objects. Where are these? The mind that does not arise, which is generated for the sake of unsurpassed enlightenment, is because one lacks the genuine instructions, the virtuous friend who shows them, etc., and is separated from faith, etc., the cause of generating bodhicitta. If one were to engage in impure conduct with one's mother for a long time, as long as one lives, the Blessed One has also taught: From the time one first generates bodhicitta, one should guard it. Not regarding the essence of bodhicitta as something to be attained is because one does not have the particularly excellent merit of the three wheels that are pure, with the Buddha as the object to be attained. The Blessed One said: One should engage in impure conduct until the essence of bodhicitta abides. These two are shown by the determination of the path of accumulation. There are two types of Hinayana mental activity, of which the mental activity that regards the path of the Hearer as something to be attained is because one is almost certainly of the Hearer lineage from the path of application onwards.

If one thinks of attaining the fruit of the Lesser Vehicle, it is because in the path of joining, one is definitely of the Hearer's lineage. Because one does not give opportunity for other mental activities, one should practice the Prajnaparamita. This single sutra shows the two paths of joining by complete negation. If one does not think of attaining perfect and complete enlightenment, it is because one does not practice the Prajnaparamita for the benefit of others, that is, one does not actually practice it. Because one does not abandon the thought of all-knowing wisdom, one should practice the Prajnaparamita in such a way that the mind and mental factors do not enter. This shows the determination of the path of seeing. Meditation is: In the path of meditation of the Lesser Vehicle, in order to attain one's own nirvana, one meditates by focusing on impermanence, etc., of forms, etc. Does one attain all-knowing wisdom by meditating? The Blessed One said: 'Subhuti, it is not so.' It is said. No meditation is: In the path of no more learning of the Lesser Vehicle, in order to restate its meaning, one does not meditate in this way by not focusing on it. Then, does one attain all-knowing wisdom by not meditating? The Blessed One said: 'It is not so.' It is said. The opposite of meditating and not meditating is neither meditating nor not meditating, because in order to attain nirvana, one neither meditates on impermanence, etc., nor, for that purpose, does one not meditate in this way. Then, does one attain all-knowing wisdom by meditating as if meditating and not meditating as if not meditating? The Blessed One said: 'It is not so.' Question: Then, does one attain all-knowing wisdom by neither meditating nor not meditating? The Blessed One said: 'It is not so.' This is merely to negate extremes and cannot be combined with the path, although Jamyang Yeshe explains it this way, Tsongkhapa thinks it is reasonable, like the previous two belonging to the accumulation. Here, the words of the root text and the commentary, from the two of meditating and not meditating, the opposite seems to be only one, but even if there are two, it should be accepted, because it is clear in the sutra. Or, thinking that in the path of learning, one can attain all-knowing wisdom only by continuously meditating on shamatha-vipassana, and thinking that in the path of no more learning, one can attain it only by not meditating on the path, and these two
