It is said that in three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and nine, one manifests absorption in a transcendent manner, thereby gaining abundant mastery as desired. Thus it is said. Here, the subsequent ascent is what was previously shown in the meditation on the peak of vision. Regarding the nine absorptions, by combining accordance and discordance, it is applied to the meanings of combination and the first going and coming, etc. By combining these two, accordance and discordance, the second going and one coming are shown. By mentioning the mind that is not equally placed at the beginning of both, it is shown that going upwards is the limit of the end, and coming downwards is the limit of each absorption. The third has three parts: the basis on which to expand, the dharma to be expanded, and the manner of expanding. The first is: upwards, eight absorptions; downwards, nine. The second is: cessation and desire-mind, which are the ultimate of peace and non-peace. Therefore, if one can expand with these two, it is intended that it is easy to expand with others. The third is: upwards, expand cessation; backwards, expand desire-mind. Therefore, it is not appropriate to make twenty places. Otherwise, upwards, cessation and cessation should not be expanded, but are expanded; and downwards, that and desire-mind, which should be expanded, are cut off. If one wants to consider it the intention of the noble ones, it is also not appropriate, because it is said that in both the actual going and coming, one enters the nine absorptions. If it is said that upwards one must enter the cessation of the end, because from the peak of existence and the cessation of expansion, one weakens towards the peak of existence, because cessation cannot overcome cessation, therefore it is for the sake of entering the cessation of the end. If so, why is it not permissible to weaken towards the peak of existence? Why is it necessary to manifest desire-mind after the peak of existence? Therefore, as at the time of maturation, or for some people, as if pulling eighty leagues downwards, cessation can also overcome desire-mind. However, due to some difference in individuals, or when first generating what was not previously generated, cessation is extremely peaceful, while desire-mind is extremely unpeaceful, therefore it cannot overcome, so it is clear that it weakens towards the peak of existence. The intention of the two sutras is like that. Then, why only expand cessation upwards and desire-mind downwards? It is thought that this is only a symbol, because those who have mastery are satisfied with entering joy.
