Due to ignorance of the nature of this Dharma, one becomes deluded and clings to the self, and becomes even more attached to the self. When attachment to the self becomes stronger, one desires happiness for the self and does not want suffering. Moreover, because one desires happiness for the self only in this life, one engages in non-virtuous actions, which become the cause of falling into the lower realms, and are not merit. Because one desires happiness for the self in the next life, one practices the ten virtuous actions, which become the cause of gods and humans, and are merit. Because one craves the happiness of equanimity, which is mainly the feeling of indifference, and is free from the suffering of the change of happiness and suffering, one enters into meditative absorption and the formless absorptions, thereby creating the unwavering karma that is the cause of the higher realms. Thus, the root of creating the three karmas is ignorance. So, how does ignorance give rise to various karmas? The Compendium of Topics states: "There are two kinds of ignorance: ignorance of the ripening of results and ignorance of the meaning of reality." Ignorance of the ripening of results gives rise to non-virtuous actions. Ignorance of the meaning of reality gives rise to meritorious and unwavering actions. This is said with regard to the intention of the time, but as the intention of the cause, it is only ignorance of suchness, as mentioned before. Therefore, the first of the twelve links is also the same. This is also what propels rebirth, and the Commentary on the Sutra of Dependent Origination states that seeing the truth will no longer propel rebirth, therefore it is considered to be the ignorance to be abandoned by seeing, which is a secret meaning. However, this does not seem reasonable. Asanga explains that what is to be abandoned by seeing is the conceptualization that arises from transforming the mind through philosophical tenets. Animals such as birds and deer, who have not had their minds transformed by philosophical tenets, also accumulate karma through being deluded by ignorance. Moreover, this ignorance is the root of all the faults of samsara, and the brothers Asanga also consider it to be the ignorance that is the retinue of afflicted mind. Therefore, it should be abandoned by meditation. If it is abandoned by meditation, then would the noble ones also have the ignorance that propels rebirth? The ignorance that propels rebirth is considered to be the retinue of afflicted mind, and if it is not said that the former pervades the latter, why would it become a point of contention? If it is abandoned by meditation, then would the noble ones also have it? Even if it is abandoned by meditation, there are many scriptures that say that the noble ones do not have it, such as intense hatred directed towards an object.

The second is karma arising from ignorance, which has three aspects. The third is the mindstream arising from that karma, which also includes the cause at the time of accumulating karma, the connection at the time of taking birth, and the consciousness at the time of fruition. This is according to those who hold the Alaya-vijnana, while according to others, it is the mental consciousness. The fourth is the name of the four, such as feeling, and the form of things like "soft." The fifth is the increase of name and form, complete from eye to mind; at the time of name and form, the first four faculties are absent. The sixth is that which arises from the combination of object, faculty, and consciousness, cutting off the three, such as pleasant objects; from the perspective of the basis, it is six. The seventh is the experience of touching and cutting off the three objects, arising as the nature of joy and pain, etc., as before, it is six. The eighth is that when experiencing the three feelings, there is craving that is conditioned by them; when tormented by suffering, desiring happiness is desire-craving. In the first three dhyanas, there is desire for happiness, and in the fourth, there is desire for equanimity, which is form-craving. In the four formless realms, there is desire for equanimity, which is formless-craving, there are three. The ninth is that craving itself increases greatly. This also has four aspects from the perspective of the object. Among them, taking desire is the five objects of desire, taking views is one or two (wrong views), taking vows and precepts is abandoning wrong precepts, and the behavior of dogs and cows, etc., because there is self-assertion, it is self-assertion, saying that the body or this is the self, so it is self-assertion, which is self-view, desiring and clinging to the pride of "I am." The tenth is the karma that, through the power of taking, makes it possible to accomplish rebirth in the future. Although the five realms and the existence of karma in the intermediate state are discussed here, the first six are only mentioned incidentally. The eleventh is the five aggregates that are connected in the place of birth by the power of karma, divided into four ways of taking birth. The twelfth is from birth onwards, to changes in age, and abandoning the same kind, that is, changes in the body, etc., and dying untimely. The reason for putting old age and death together is that death can occur even without old age, so it is not a reason for a definite sequence. Grief and reciting mantras, suffering, displeasure, quarrels, etc., are also included.
