Thereafter, in the path of post-attainment meditation, as explained in the "Lamp of Wisdom," it is in accordance with other treatises. How so? In accordance with the flow and not in accordance with the flow. What are these two? "Due to ignorance as a condition, there are actions," and so forth, and due to birth as a condition, there is aging and death, and due to aging and death as a condition, there arise lamentation, wailing, suffering, distress, and turmoil. Individually contemplating these, one realizes, "Thus, this mere aggregate of suffering arises." And, "With the cessation of aging and death, lamentation and so forth cease, and with the cessation of birth, aging and death cease." And, "So forth, with the cessation of ignorance, actions cease." Individually contemplating between these, one realizes, "Thus, this mere aggregate of suffering ceases." These are the two. In this way, as the sutras say, the defiled flow and the purified reverse flow, the reverse flow and the flow of those two should also be seen as representing them. Abhyas: Explaining "With the cessation of ignorance, actions cease," and so forth, as a reverse flow, is inconsistent with the sutra in this context, and neither defilement nor purification can be a reverse flow, so it should be abandoned. Therefore, that is the purified flow, and "Due to birth as a condition, there is aging and death," and so forth, is the defiled reverse flow. Why is it a reverse flow and a flow? Because first birth is later, and later birth is first, and because it is examined in reverse from that. In the explanation of the Compendium, "Aging and death, the arising of aging and death, the cessation of aging and death, the path leading to the cessation of aging and death," and so forth, all connected, are said to be the defiled reverse flow of the category of truth. In the Realization of the Grounds, why is dependent origination shown in the order of reverse flow, starting from aging and death? Because it is intentional to show the truth of reality. Thus, birth and aging and death are completely distinguished by the truth of suffering, and it appears that this is what is contemplated. The meaning of this scripture is: Birth and aging are the ultimate fruition of afflictions, so because it is the truth of suffering. To contemplate arising from aging and death, and then ceasing from that, is to become skilled in the truth of suffering and the truth of cessation, which is the cessation of that. To contemplate arising from ignorance and then ceasing from that is the truth of origin and the path.

Because they are wise, ignorance and action are the truth of the origin of suffering, and the path is what eliminates them. Therefore, the commentary's explanation has not grasped the actual intention of the ground. The lama with the eye of Dharma speaks thus. Here, the commentary, starting from the explanation of how to practice, analyzes the limits of dependent origination through eight sections. Here, slightly analyzing the limits of dependent origination, there are eight points: the general characteristic, the individual classifications and summaries, the way of becoming a condition, the individual functions, completion in how many lifetimes, the establishment of similar grounds, the way of how to practice, and the benefits of practicing in this way. The first point is, in the "Distinguishing Sutra," it says, "This existing, that arises; this arising, that is born. For example, with ignorance as a condition, there is action," etc. The meaning of what is said is, in the "Compendium," it says, "How is it in terms of characteristics? Because it arises from an unwavering condition, arises from an impermanent condition, and arises from a condition of ability." These three explain the three sentences of the sutra, that is, the first, when external and internal things arise, it is not that anyone thinks beforehand and then does it, but generally, if there are causes and conditions, then the result will arise. The second is, even if there is a cause, it will not arise from a permanent condition, but from an impermanent condition. The third is, it arises from a condition and is impermanent, but not all results arise from all causes, but from causes that have the ability to produce and are in accordance with each other. This shows three differences based on the dependent origination of both belonging to the same continuum and not belonging to the same continuum. The second part is divided into two: classification and summary. First, there are twelve branches from ignorance to old age and death, which are based on internal dependent origination. What is the nature of these? In general, ignorance has two types: afflicted and non-afflicted, but the second type is also manifestly possessed by arhats, so it is not suitable as the root of taking birth in samsara, so it is the first type. This is further divided into two types: ignorance of the results of karma and ignorance of the ultimate truth, which is also the cause of arousing the three actions. How does this become the cause of arousing the actions? It is merely the aggregates of dependent origination.
