Nāla. The basis of this consciousness is the Mahāyāna path of the sixteen consciousnesses, such as the arising of the Tathāgata, which depends on the Mother (Prajñāpāramitā). In the case of distinguishing characteristics, the teacher did not mention the basis consciousness, which is the basis of error, and it will be explained. Not knowing that, even when the three wisdoms encompass the eight meanings, twenty characteristics are applied to the Śrāvakas, which has already been extensively refuted. Furthermore, what is the purpose of the more distinctive characteristic than that? It is wrong to say that the characteristic of action is shown by the distinguishing characteristic. In the commentary, it is said that the action of those who are known by the distinguishing characteristic is the action of the combination represented by the distinguishing characteristic. Therefore, in the case of characteristics, this teacher only speaks of errors, and following him, those who want to truly understand these characteristics are only pleasing the gods. If so, what is it? It is said that the characteristics of knowledge, distinction, action, and essence are such that, if each of them is compared to itself, they can also become their own nature and their own characteristics, but here, these four must be described as the characteristics of combination. Compared to that, the last characteristic is nature, and the distinction mostly has other meanings, and the two, knowledge and action, are the fruit symbolizing the cause. It is like a crow symbolizing a mansion, and it is only known through that door. The fruit symbolizes the cause, this is the meaning, and it is also accepted by the great chariot of the snowy land, which is the meaning of the root commentary. Some great translators say that there is no difference between the basis of characteristics and what is represented, and the Sanskrit is also the same, so it is not appropriate to separate the two and explain them to the Tibetans. It is better not to apply the term "basis of characteristics" to the phenomena of combination that are represented, because it appears as such in the great treatises. The second has two parts: the meaning of the agent and the object, and the uncommon way of representing it. The first is, for example, cooking, which refers to what is cooked and what is cooked with, and is a word related to the agent and the object, so it can be drawn into two. Similarly, the term "characteristic" is also related to both the agent and the object of what is represented and what represents it, so the venerable one first said

What serves as the signifier, and what serves as the signified? For these two, the agent and the action, the teacher uses the terms 'accomplisher' and 'accomplished'. Therefore, like the sign and the to-be-proven, such as the knower and the known; like the axe and the tree, such as the cutter and the cut; like the subject and the object, such as the cognizer and the cognized, and so on, the establishment as 'accomplisher' and 'accomplished' is limitless. Secondly, why are the first three characteristics called 'accomplisher'? Because these three signify the unions. How so? The signifier and the knower, in sequence, signify the realization of the three wisdoms for oneself on top of the union of the three wisdoms, and the two abilities to generate activities for others, thus these two abilities are the basis or the signified. The way of signifying is like seeing that abundant harvests are produced from agriculture, one knows that it has the ability to produce it. Similarly, when one sees that the realization of the three wisdoms and the special actions of benefiting others arise from the union, one infers that the union has the ability to produce them. These two signify that there is generally ability, thus it signifies as 'excluding non-existence'. When one wonders whether this also exists in the union of hearers and solitary realizers, the special characteristics make one understand that it exists only in this and not in others, thus it signifies as 'excluding other-existence'. Therefore, one knows that the union possessing the sixteen characteristics as essence, fruit, or cause itself generates the Thus-Gone One. Thus, although the first three signify ability, there are three different ways of signifying. Why is the last one called 'accomplished'? Because this is the nature of the union of the three wisdoms, therefore it is to be signified by the previous three. Is it not signifying ability? How is the union the signified? Because these two are not different in substance, there is no fault. Because these are not names, named, or characteristics that are separately established. If this is the signified, then how can it be a characteristic? Has it not been said that the sound of characteristic is related to both the agent and the action? Also, the sixteen essences make one understand the nature of the union of the three wisdoms, therefore it is also the signifier. Then is it not the 'accomplisher'? There is no fault, although the union signifies, the meaning is different.
