"Those who have knowledge" means that when the perception of form disappears in oneself, only the mind without form remains, and the actual experience of that samadhi does not arise. The intention of being free from attachment to form here should be explained according to the Compendium of Topics, but it should not be clung to. Some great Abhidharma masters also have illusions about this method, so it needs to be explained in detail. The third is: external small forms, such as good colors, bad colors, bad and good, and large forms are applied in the same way. Among them, a good color is one that appears extremely beautiful. A bad color is the opposite of that. Bad refers to things that are unpleasant from sound to touch. Good is the opposite of that. Small refers to the forms of sentient beings and objects. Large refers to houses and dwellings. The fourth is: the inner observer perceives himself as having form, and then observes the size, good, and bad, etc., without necessarily being completely certain whether it is larger or smaller than himself. The object of observation in this way must be oneself, and one needs to be unattached to oneself. Even if one is unattached, one cannot obtain the desire to do as one pleases, so one desires to obtain it. The fifth is: Then, what is meant by "having form" here? It is that one's perception of form has not been completely destroyed, but rather it has been retained. The sixth is: For external things, the obscurations that are applied as one pleases are the antidotes to the obstacles to them. This is a symbol, why use earth as a symbol? In order to clearly accomplish special qualities, in order to be completely familiar with practice. For example, in order to accomplish the overcoming places, the all-pervading places, the miracles of the noble ones, freedom from afflictions, the wisdom of the wish-fulfilling place, individual correct knowledge, etc. The second, the liberation gate of the formless one viewing form, is also the same as before. Everything else is the same as before, the difference in the basis is that the first dhyana is obtained. The way of viewing is to view oneself as not having form, but as perceiving the four names of space. Why is it said that it does not have form? Because one perceives oneself as the four names or space, so the perception of form is destroyed. Then, in these two cases, one's perception of form

What is the reason for the occurrence of both knowing and not knowing? When incarnating, the incarnator appears, and then it is made to disappear. Is it because of the incarnation itself? Third, 'gate' refers to the remainder. Among these four, the individual is the same as before, but the special feature is that they have attained the first two liberations. The ground is the same as before, that is, one personally realizes and cultivates through the body the liberation that is more repulsive than the ground. How does one abide in this? Like this, some here have attained equanimity and completely purified mindfulness. Relying on this, they meditate on the repulsive. And, in the Abhidharmakośa, 'the third, at the end' have the same meaning. The necessity is: liking the ugly appearance, liking incarnation, thereby generating the mind of effort; disliking the ugly appearance, disliking incarnation, thereby counteracting all the afflictions that generate the mind of non-effort. The liking and disliking here should be understood as explained, not taken literally, because here one has attained the fourth dhyana. How does one rely on the three perceptions of mutual dependence, mutual connection, and mutual sameness of taste? The first is: like three vases of gold, silver, and copper, for the three appearances—ugly, not ugly, and intermediate—one meditates that the silver vase is beautiful relative to the copper vase and not beautiful relative to the gold vase, thereby reversing the attachment to ugly and not ugly. The second is: one meditates that the two situations of being not beautiful relative to the gold vase and beautiful relative to the copper vase are connected to the silver vase, thereby reversing the separate attachment to ugly and not ugly. The third is: relying on meditating as in the previous two, one ultimately has no separate attachment to all ugly and not ugly, and everything becomes beautiful or desirous of manifestation, thereby attaining the perception of the same taste. This is the time of accomplishment. Like this, it is both the liberation of ugliness and the gate. Therefore, through that gate, that is, the method of manifestation, one personally realizes through the body of wisdom, that is, it arises and is perfected in the continuum, and therefore the noble ones abide in it many times. Why is it that only in this and the liberation of cessation does 'personally realize and abide' appear, and not in others? Because these two liberations have abandoned the obscurations of form and formlessness.
