So it is thought. Secondly, as stated in the Abhidharmakośa, "There are two kinds of impure meditation." These two liberations are practiced in order as an antidote to attachment to the colors of the desire realm and to the colors of the first dhyana realm, and it is believed that the ground also relies on the first two dhyanas. According to their system, these two are considered to be practicing impurity, so they are not adopted here. Then what is it? In the Compendium, it is said that the remaining qualities, whether they are Śrāvakas, Bodhisattvas, or Tathāgatas, are attained by relying on the fourth dhyana that has reached its ultimate perfection. Thus, it is stated that the support for the remaining qualities of the four immeasurables and the five superknowledges is such. These can also rely on dhyana, so they rely on the ultimate essence of the fourth dhyana. This scripture also refutes the view that Śrāvakas rely only on the first two dhyanas. Regarding the support of these two, the Sunlight Commentary says, "The intention of making dhyana and formless dhyana optional, which is also recorded in the Ornament of Light Commentary, is that the former can also be practiced by attaining the formless dhyana, and the latter can easily destroy the perception of form if the formless dhyana is attained, so it is said to rely on the formless, but it is not necessary to rely on it, because these two are the grounds of dhyana, so they contradict the formless realm, because the essence of the formless realm does not take form as its object, which has been stated many times." Therefore, in the Compendium, it is said, "In the first dhyana, it is acceptable whether one has not separated from or has abandoned attachment to form." And, "In the second dhyana, it is acceptable whether one has separated from or has abandoned attachment to form." Thus, in the former case, one needs to retain the perception of form, which is easy if one has not separated from it. If one has separated from it by attaining the formless dhyana, one should not manifest it, but retain the perception of form. In the latter case, one needs to destroy the perception of form, which is easy if one has attained the formless dhyana, and even if one has not attained it, one needs to abide in a non-form mind. Thus, the former attains the formless dhyana, and the latter does not attain it, but can still practice, so it is possible for the practitioner to attain the formless dhyana, but the support of these two is not the formless realm. Secondly, regarding the essence of the ground, it is also said, "One has separated from desire for form, but does not manifest the samadhi of the formless realm, and its thought."
