If asked why, the Vaibhashikas think that, just like a dog holding wood while chopping firewood, with the power of not forgetting mindfulness, wisdom places itself on the object. But the teacher said that wisdom first separates the objects one by one, and then mindfulness grasps it, so wisdom makes mindfulness dwell on the object. This is the correct way to say it. The second is the second part of the separate explanation, which is to explain the aspects of the four right abandonments. The second is to explain the path arising from effort after the path of contemplating things. Observing things like the body from the perspective of their own characteristics and general characteristics, and entering into it, diligence arises in abandoning what is to be abandoned and adopting the antidote. Therefore, this path is the aspect of the four right abandonments. So, with what object as the target, in what way, with what essence, and for what purpose is it abandoned? First, there are four kinds of wholesome purification and unwholesome afflictions that have arisen and have not arisen. Second, it is to rightly abandon the afflictions that have arisen in a way that does not allow them to continue, and not to generate the afflictions that have not arisen before, to increase the purity that has arisen, and to generate the purity that has not arisen before, that is, to initiate the diligence that is the cause of these four. That is, as the sutra says, generate desire, strive, initiate diligence, completely grasp the mind, and completely abide. In this way, these four are spoken of one by one. This sutra shows that diligence meditation is combined with the place, just like this, desire is the place, because it is the preliminary of diligence. Effort is the sign of calm abiding, complete grasping, and equanimity, that is, remembering the signs of these three, is the time to practice the flawless antidote. That is, when insight is stronger and calm abiding is weaker, just like a candle in the wind, the mind is completely shaken, so the truth is not clearly seen, and at this time, the sign of calm abiding is remembered. When it is the opposite of the former, just like sleeping, the truth is not clearly seen, and at this time, the sign of complete grasping is remembered. When calm abiding and insight enter equally and naturally, the sign of equanimity is remembered, and this is effort. Initiate diligence.

It is for the meaning of dispelling sinking and excitement, so it is mentioned below that diligent cultivation, etc. Among them, when sinking inward, one remembers the Buddha's body and other images, and diligently cultivates with the intention of uplifting the mind. When excitement arises outward, one remembers things that cause aversion to samsara, and with the intention of settling the mind, the two can dispel sinking and excitement. Third, the Compendium of Topics states: What is its nature? It is diligence. Thus. Fourth, the first two cause all unfavorable aspects to decline, and the latter two enable all favorable aspects to increase. Why are these four called Right Exertions? Because they abandon what is to be abandoned, both born and unborn, they are called Right Exertions by the name of one aspect, or as stated in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge: Why is it said that diligence is Right Exertion? Because it enables body, speech, and mind to be rightly exerted. Thus, Right Exertion appears, and it can greatly destroy harm. The third is the third of the separate explanations, which is the explanation of the four aspects of the feet of miraculous power. Third, the path of cultivating samadhi is explained under the path of effort-born, and having diligence in adopting and abandoning what is to be abandoned and what is to be treated, samadhi can make the mind workable, so it is the basis for generating special qualities. Thus, this path has the four aspects of the feet of miraculous power. So, what is the object of focus? In what way? With what nature? For what purpose is the mind cultivated? First, it is the activity of miraculous powers such as transforming one body into many and many into one. Second, as stated in the Middle Extremes: Abandoning five faults, cultivating eight activities, arising from the cause of reliance. Thus, cultivate the eight activities of abandonment, the eight being: aspiration, effort, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Because they manifest activity for the sake of abandonment, they are spoken of in this way. Having these is the cause. Among them, the first four are manifesting desire, diligence, manifesting faith, and body and mind being workable. These four are also established in order as support and supported, cause and effect.
