However, the commentators, both early and late, only refuted the claim that the Tathagata has karma to accumulate, because they did not distinguish between the "Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra" and the "Condensed Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra," and the error was caused by the severity of the commentary by Nyi Nak. In the "Eight Thousand Verse Sutra," if rejoicing can nourish, then Manjushri said that good and evil in dreams, etc., are accumulated. Shariputra retorted that the Tathagata also has karma to accumulate, because he would generate the discriminating thought, "My life is exhausted," which is very excessive. As an answer, the sutra says that the Tathagata has no thoughts or discriminations, like the sky. The sutras of the second answer quoted earlier were also spoken by Manjushri, not by Shariputra. In the "Small Destroyer of Harm Sutra," Shariputra asked: If one generates discriminating thoughts after waking up, will that karma also be accumulated or diminished? Manjushri replied, "As you say," etc., was a question posed to Shariputra in order to show the difference between the karma of dreams and daytime in conventional truth. Then, Shariputra showed the difference between the karma of dreams and daytime by showing that karma and mind do not arise without an object. They explain that the karma done when not asleep has an object, and when one rejoices after doing karma in a dream, because there is no object, the power of karma is great or small. The third objection is: The Blessed One said, "Venerable Manjushri, all karma and all mind are secluded." So, if that is the case, how can karma arise with an object, and not without an object? How can mind arise with an object, and not without an object? The third answer is: Manjushri said, "Venerable Shariputra, with a sign as an object, karma arises with an object, and not without an object. Mind arises with an object, and not without an object." That is to say, seclusion is ultimate truth, and existence is in the presence of those who cling to signs. The fourth objection is: Manjushri, if a Bodhisattva gives alms, keeps precepts, practices patience, exerts effort, meditates, and cultivates wisdom in a dream, then that root of virtue also

If one completely dedicates (merit) to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, does that become a complete dedication to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? This is (the question). The fourth answer is: If the venerable Shariputra, the great Bodhisattva Maitreya, a one-birth bound being, prophesied by the Blessed One to be irreversible, were to appear here, ask him, and he will answer. Thus, the question was directed to Maitreya. But he said: I have not truly seen anything to ask a question about, anyone to give an answer, or any dharma to answer a question about. Thus he spoke. Therefore, Subhuti did not answer because of this question, the future Buddhas will appear in succession, so this question was not fully revealed. If it were fully revealed, then the appearance of future Tathagatas would be meaningless, as stated in the "Sunlight Treatise." Previously, the admission of the existence of karmic results in dreams, this question has also been answered, if there is still doubt about the answered question, because the boundless mind abides in peace, who would answer? With this thought, he said to ask Maitreya, as stated in the "Ornament Treatise." Both of these and the "Commentary" believe that Maitreya also did not answer this question. Shantideva made three refutation answers. The first is, just as no karma is accumulated in dreams, so giving and harming do not become merit and sin, so waking up also does not become merit and sin, as an answer to this refutation. If one kills sentient beings in a dream and feels happy upon waking, does that become sin? Thus he asked back, and Shariputra himself said that karma arises from grasping at objects, etc. If one thinks that the conceptual thought of waking grasps the karma of dreams, and for this reason, the karmic results of dreams exist, then when waking, grasping with conceptual thought should even more so have results, thus he answered, and combined the first two into one. The second is similar to a refutation answer that contradicts the scriptures. The third is that dreams and non-mentation are the same in nature, therefore, the word "dream" is used to indicate non-apprehension, and then he asks whether practicing the six perfections and dedicating in a dream will become dedication. In short, the question is to practice the six perfections while abiding in non-apprehension. The method of perfect enlightenment that reaches the end of non-apprehension is to make non-apprehension itself the main thing.
