What do you think? If one abides in Suchness as it is, will it not become permanent? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. Thus it is said. In this regard, the Ornament of Manifest Realization says: Even if one understands form, etc., one cannot directly realize Suchness, which is inseparable from them, so it is said that the difficulty of understanding this is profound. The Great Lord, however, thinks that although Suchness abides as it is without changing, it is not the nature of permanence, so he thinks that the difficulty of understanding this is profound. The profundity in terms of what is to be known is: all dharmas are the nature of Suchness, which is free from elaboration, and although it is impossible to practice giving, etc., in the conventional sense, one must practice various perfections such as giving, etc. Is Suchness mind? He replied: It is not so. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is there mind other than Suchness? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. Thus it is said. Suchness and mind are neither one nor different, and although the two are mutually exclusive, the mind can realize Suchness. The Great Lord thinks that the difficulty of understanding this is profound, and this is also the intention of the Sutras, Sunlight, and Ornament Light. The profundity in terms of knowledge is: dharmas are the essence of Suchness, which is free from all elaborations, and therefore, the elaboration of non-conceptual wisdom, which is invisible, is the only thing that is seen. Does Suchness truly see Suchness? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. Thus it is said. The profundity in terms of conduct is: by the nature of dharma, that is, abiding in it, there is no conduct in terms of characteristics for all dharmas, and that itself is the conduct of giving, etc., in terms of names. Then, what does one who acts in this way act upon? He replied: Bhagavan, one who acts in this way does not act upon anything. Why is that? Bhagavan, thus acting towards the Great Mother of Enlightenment and abiding in Suchness, these universal actions will not arise or continue. Thus it is said. The profundity in terms of non-duality is: by acting with the concepts of characteristics and non-characteristics, one realizes the nature of non-duality, and although there is no object to be attained and no means to attain it, one must practice all paths.
