Therefore, he answered the question. The second part has two divisions: the actual meaning and the way it symbolizes other things. The first part is: A single moment of lamp light, whether appearing separately before and after, or gathering simultaneously before and after, cannot burn a tree. However, relying on the previous lights, gradually burning completely in sequence, this is the example of a lamp. Similarly, relying on the Bodhicitta generated by wisdom, whether appearing separately before and after, or not relying on them, one cannot attain enlightenment. However, by practicing the ten bhumis previously mentioned, one should understand that enlightenment is cultivated. This is what he said sincerely from his heart. Likewise, the Thus-Gone One shows examples to wise people, making it easy to understand, so he answers with examples. Just as: The first encounter with the wick of a butter lamp does not burn, Without it, it will not burn either. The last encounter with the flame does not burn the wick, Without the last flame, the wick will not burn either. The initial mind does not touch the supreme enlightenment, Without it, it cannot be touched either. The final mind does not attain peaceful enlightenment, Without it, it cannot be attained either. Through these two examples, it is shown that non-dependent moments before and after cannot serve as a cause. Then, Just as drops of water fill a vase, From the beginning to the end, Gradually, little by little, it is completely filled. Likewise, the initial mind is also the cause of supreme enlightenment, Gradually, white qualities are perfected, and one becomes a Buddha. Therefore, relying on (the previous mind), all minds before and after are said to be the cause. The reason for using the butter lamp wick as an example is that it is easy to understand the sequence of burning, while with other (examples) it is difficult to understand because of the speed. The second part is, if each Bodhicitta arising before and after cannot attain enlightenment, but it can be attained through sequence, then how should one understand that this example and meaning are not contradictory? One must follow the chapter on the eight aspects of profound Dharma nature. Shanti (Shantideva) said: One should understand how to become enlightened through the example of the lamp. So, where can the eight aspects of profound Dharma nature be manifested? Where can it be connected with birth? This is how it is explained. The third part has two divisions: the actual meaning and the way it symbolizes other things. The first part has two divisions: not burning without dependence, and burning with dependence. The first part has two divisions: the first and second moments do not burn. The first part is:

For example: Like the first moment when the flame of a lamp and the heartwood of a tree meet, that is the subject. The reason is that the nature of the flame is to burn, and the nature of the heartwood is to be burned, and these two do not exist, which is what is to be established. Moreover, without the second moment, i.e., without relying on the first moment, it cannot do so, which is a special explanation of what is to be established. The proximate cause of the previous similar kind of these two, and the co-operative conditions such as the effort of the hand, through these causes, these two simultaneously generate the meeting with each other, i.e., only generate the meeting, and do not generate the special burning ability, that is the reason. If it is said that there is no difference in generating the meeting simultaneously, then both are equally generated simultaneously by their own causes, and there is no extra ability. The second case is: Just as shown in the first moment, not only that, relying on the first moment, the flame and the heartwood generate the special ability to burn and be burned, the second moment is also the subject. If there is no first moment, i.e., without relying on it, the reason etc. are connected as before, which is what is to be established. Because without relying on it, the second moment not only does not exist in the ultimate truth, but also cannot arise in the conventional truth, that is the reason. After showing the damaging valid cognition, the establishment of the reason is: If the first moment does not arise, then it will be constant, i.e., it will exist in all places, times, and natures, or etc., it will become completely non-existent, because it arises without a cause. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: Because without a cause does not rely on others, therefore it will be constant or non-existent. Things sometimes arise because they depend on others. Just like that. Because from such an inference it is seen that it sometimes arises, therefore there is a cause, and that is the first moment. The meaning of saying that the burner and the burned do not exist and exist here, and what will be explained is: For the flame that produces heat and the wood that has already burned, it should not be understood according to complete burning and unburned and literal meaning. Otherwise, when the second moment exists, what is said is not reasonable, and the burner and the burned exist simultaneously, and the cause and effect relationship is not allowed. The second case is: Because for what reason burning does not depend on the burner
