Mundane and pure. The last three are established as faculties by the meaning of obtaining the latter two and nirvana without remainder, and abandoning what is to be abandoned by seeing and what is to be abandoned by meditation, and being able to abide in comfort in the present dharma. As the Treasury says: 'For one's own purpose and all, To control the object, six faculties are established. To control the male and female, In the body, female and male faculties are established. From all realms, afflictions and, To control purification, Life and feelings, And the five faculties of faith and so on are desired. Nirvana and so on, from above to above, To control obtaining, The all-knowing and the all-knowing, And likewise the all-knowing faculty.' Thus it is said. Among them, the first fourteen are called the faculties of all afflictions, and the last eight are called the faculties of purification. However, it is not definite, otherwise, the mind and the three feelings would be without the path of liberation. The five of faith and so on are mostly said to be mundane, but the reason for being indefinite is as before. Among them, six are imputed, and the rest are substantially existent. The two of male and female are part of the body faculty, life is the state of the continuum of the aggregates, and the last three are part of faith and so on, so there is no separate substance. Second, by the power of the basis for entering samsara, and being newly born there, and abiding and enjoying the fruits of happiness and suffering, six, two, one, and five are established. In nirvana, too, it is determined as five, one, and one by the power of the four. As the Treasury says: 'Also, the basis of entering, Birth, abiding, and enjoyment, Fourteen are thus reversed, The faculties are different.' Thus it is said. Third, as the Treasury says: 'Seeing, meditating, and no more learning paths, Nine, three, three are stainless.' Thus it is established on the path of liberation, and following the school that only speaks of the uncontaminated, it is also the same in the Sunlight Treatise. That is, the five of faith and so on of the path of seeing, and the pleasant feeling, the mental pleasant feeling, equanimity, and the mind, when these nine arise uncontaminated, the unknown is established as the all-knowing faculty, but it is not that these nine arise simultaneously. Likewise, it is the same for the other two. In the Compendium it says: 'What is the unknown to be known faculty? It is what is controlled by the fifteen moments of the mind of the path of joining and the path of seeing.'

What is the root of knowledge? It is that which, based on the sixteenth moment of the mind of the path of seeing, has power over all paths of learning. What is the root of possessing all knowledge? It is that which has power over the path of no learning. Thus, it is initially established from the path of joining. In the commentary, the basis of the first two is counted by enumerating unpleasantnesses, making ten. The Twenty Thousand Verse states: Among them, what is the root of making the unknown known? It is that which subdues and makes invisible the faculty of faith of those learners who have not yet realized it. Thus. Among them, what is the root of knowledge? It is the faculty of faith to the faculty of wisdom of those learners who possess all knowledge. Thus. Among them, what is the root of protecting all knowledge? It is the faculty of faith to the faculty of wisdom of the Arhats, Solitary Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas who are non-learners. Thus. Among them, the meaning of the first is the Stream-enterer of the Hearers and the Bodhisattva who is in the stage of aspiration. The meaning of the second is the one who abides in the fruit of Stream-entry and the Bodhisattva who is on the first bhumi and above. The meaning of the third is explained by the Arhats of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, the one on the tenth bhumi, and the Tathagata, with the destruction of a hundred thousand harms. The Compendium states: What is the meaning of the root of making the unknown known? It is said that one should regard the meaning of the five faculties in all the paths of joining, starting from the desire for virtue, striving for the realization of truth, as its meaning. What is the meaning of the root of knowledge? It is said that one should regard the meaning of the five faculties from the fruit of Stream-entry up to the Vajra-like Samadhi as its meaning. What is the meaning of the root of possessing all knowledge? It is said that one should regard the meaning of the five faculties from the path of no learning up to the realm of Nirvana without remainder as its meaning. Thus, although it is initially established from the path of joining, it should be done between fifteen moments. It states: The root of making the unknown known is far from the fruit of the conduct of a renunciate and is a worldly conceptualization.
