Now, the first point is that the fifteen mentioned in the sutra from "no maker" to "immovable" are explained in the treatises as aspects of the path of truth of the basis of knowledge. The noble ones considered the first four to be the antidote to afflictive obscurations, being uncontaminated, and the rest to be the antidote to cognitive obscurations, making a distinction. The Pramāṇavārttika and the teachers and their followers also did the same. This is because they considered that the accumulation and joining paths are not the path of truth, and that the path of no-more-learning is not the antidote to the obscurations, so they did not classify them. The reason for showing the antidotes to the two obscurations in this way is that the four, such as "no maker," appear to have the aspect of selflessness of the person, and these four are the four proofs, establishments, and determinations of the path, and grasping at the self of the person is the cause of afflictive obscurations. Also, because the sixteen, such as impermanence, are also divided into the antidotes to afflictive obscurations, the first four are the antidotes to afflictive obscurations. The reason for showing the rest as the antidotes to cognitive obscurations is that these aspects of the path must be shown as the antidotes to obscurations, and the antidotes to afflictive obscurations have already been shown, so this is unnecessary. The second point is that in the Heart Essence, it says, "Because it is similar to dreams and so on, it is dreams and so on." Like this, the five, such as dreams, represent the subsequent attainment of pure worldly realization that appears without an object. Therefore, it represents the realization of equipoise that lacks the appearance of the antidotes to abandonment of the six, such as the contaminated and the non-pervasive afflictions, so it is established as uncontaminated. The third point is that there is no interruption between the equipoise of the path of seeing, and because the path of meditation is long, it also arises in alternation with the subsequent attainment of manifestation, so the first is established as uncontaminated and the second as contaminated. The fourth point is that because cognitive obscurations are difficult to abandon and afflictive obscurations are not like that, it is established as both contaminated and uncontaminated, and as one uncontaminated. The fifth point is that although the noble ones did not explicitly point out which person, the teachers, considering that this is the occasion for showing the path of truth of the aspect of the basis of knowledge from the three knowledges, explained it in relation to the two, hearers and solitary realizers. Regarding the nature of the path, in the Sunlight Commentary, the Pramāṇavārttika, and the Adornment of Sunlight, the first path is not explicitly pointed out, and the latter two are explained in the paths of seeing and meditation. In the Clear Words, it says that the latter two are established only in the path of meditation, this is an explanation.

This translation seems to be based on the Abhisamayalankara, but it is inconsistent with the views of the two great masters, so it should be understood according to the understanding of Dromtönpa and Sherjung regarding the path of seeing and the path of cultivation. It is difficult to understand on the first path, because the phrase "the uncontaminated path of the Hearers" is associated with the Hearers. The Commentary on the Words states: "In the chapter on omniscience, mentioning the sixteen aspects of the Hearers is the characteristic of their path of seeing and path of cultivation. Mentioning the fifteen aspects of the Solitary Realizers is the characteristic of their path of cultivation." That is, the twelve aspects of the first three truths, and the first four of the path truth, it is good to consider that the Hearers have both the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, but it is inappropriate to associate the first twelve aspects only with the Hearers. Therefore, Sherjung said that the afflictive obscurations of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers are the same, because they are both to be abandoned. Abiding in the truths such as suffering, having characteristics such as impermanence, and having sixteen aspects such as selflessness are the same, which is good, so the Solitary Realizers should also be understood as having the antidote paths of seeing and cultivation. Regarding the view of the master, the great translator Rinchen Zangpo said: "Are these aspects of the three paths the knowable aspects of the base consciousness, or are they the objects of meaning to be realized?" If it is the former, then these paths do not show the aspects to be realized, which is inconsistent with the context, because here it is to explain the objects of the base consciousness, etc. If it is the latter, then it is inappropriate to explain the path truth related to the Hearers and Solitary Realizers as the base consciousness here, because the objects of the base consciousness do not completely include them, just like the first three truths. Therefore, this master is wrong, and the intention of the noble ones is: the antidote paths of the two cognitive obscurations show all the contaminated and uncontaminated antidote paths in the continuums of the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas, because the noble ones did not use limiting words such as 'of this person,' and the general words are also logically consistent, so it should be explained in this way." However, in general, the objects of the base consciousness do not completely include them, but they must be included in the chapter on the path truth, because this is the chapter on the base consciousness among the three knowledges, and the Hearers and Solitary Realizers only take their own continuums of body, feeling, mind, and phenomena as objects, so their objects are inferior to the Great Vehicle.
