It is said that one meditates by relying on the basis of the earth. Regarding this first one, it is said that attachment to desire has been abandoned, but attachment to form has not been abandoned. Although the former is certain, the latter is not necessarily considered so, meaning that one can still meditate even without abandoning it. Does a Bodhisattva also meditate by relying on the basis of form and desire realm deities? The second is, in the Abhidharmakosha, it says, "Impurity meditation exists in two dhyanas." This means that these two liberation sequences are, in order, the practice of counteracting attachment to the color of the desire realm and attachment to the color of the first dhyana realm. The ground is also considered to be based on the first two dhyanas. According to their view, these two are considered to be the practice of meditating on impurity, so they are not adopted here. So what is it? In the Compendium of Topics, it says that the remaining qualities, whether they are Shravakas, Bodhisattvas, or Tathagatas, are realized by relying on the fourth dhyana that has reached the ultimate perfection. Thus, it is said that the basis of the remaining qualities such as the four immeasurables and the five superknowledges. These can also be based on dhyana, so they are based on the ultimate essence of the fourth dhyana. This scripture also refutes the view that if one is a Shravaka, one can only rely on the first two dhyanas. Regarding the basis of these two, the Sunlight Treatise says that making dhyana and formless dhyana optional is also recorded in the Ornament of Light Treatise, the intention is that the former can also meditate by obtaining formless dhyana, and the latter, if one obtains formless dhyana, it is easy to destroy the perception of form, so it is said to rely on the formless realm, but it is not necessary to rely on it. Because these two are the ground of dhyana, it is contradictory in the formless realm. Because in the essence of the formless realm, it has been said many times that form is not taken as an object. Therefore, in the Compendium of Topics, it says, "For the first, it is okay to not abandon or abide in attachment to form." And "For the second, it is okay to abandon or abide in attachment to form." This means that the former needs to abide in the perception of form, and if it is not abandoned, it is easy to do so. If one obtains formless dhyana and abandons it, do not manifest it, but abide in the perception of form. The latter needs to destroy the perception of form, and if one obtains formless dhyana, it is easy to do so, and even if one does not obtain it, one must abide in the non-form perception. Like this, the former...

Even if one has not attained the formless absorptions, or has not attained the later ones, one can still meditate, so it is possible for a meditator to attain the formless absorptions, but the basis of these two is not formless. Second, regarding the actual practice of earth, it is also said, "Being free from desire for form, not manifesting the formless attainments, but possessing the perception of them." This means that when one's perception of form disappears, one merely abides in the wisdom of the formless realm, and the actual attainment of the formless realm does not arise. Here, the intention of saying to be free from attachment to form should be explained according to the Compendium of Topics, but it is not necessarily to be taken that way. Some great Abhidharma masters also have misconceptions about this method, so it needs to be explained in detail. Third, it is about external small forms, such as good colors, bad colors, bad and good colors, and large forms, which are similarly applied. Among them, a good color is one that appears very beautiful. A bad color is the opposite of that. Bad refers to what is unpleasant from sound to touch. Good is the opposite of that. Small refers to the forms of sentient beings and utensils. Large refers to houses and dwellings. Fourth, the inner observer himself perceives himself as having form, and then, regarding size, goodness, and badness, he uncertainly looks at what is larger or smaller than himself, etc. The object of observation in this way is oneself, and one needs to have both attachment and detachment towards it, and even if one has both attachment and detachment towards it, one does not obtain the power of wishful thinking, so one wants to obtain it. Fifth, then, what does "having form" mean here? It means that one has not completely destroyed the perception of form in oneself, but rather maintains it. Sixth, for external objects, the obscuration of imposing obstacles as one pleases, that is, the antidote that causes obstacles to it. This is a symbol, why does it start from earth? Because it is for manifesting special qualities, for the purpose of fully familiarizing oneself with the method of practice. For example, in order to accomplish the spheres of mastery, the spheres of exhaustion, the supernormal powers of the noble ones, freedom from afflictions, knowledge of the desired place, individual correct knowledge, and so on. Second, the liberation of formless contemplation of form is also the same as before. Everything else is the same as before, only the basis of
