Do so. When it is the opposite of the former, like falling asleep, when one does not clearly see suchness, then one attends to the sign of grasping. When tranquility and insight both occur simultaneously and naturally, then one attends to the sign of equanimity, and this is effort. Initiating diligence is for the purpose of eliminating sinking and excitement, therefore grasping and so on are mentioned after it. That is, when the mind sinks inward, one attends to the image of the Buddha and so on, grasping the mind in a way that elevates the mind; when it is excited outward, one attends to things that cause aversion to samsara, binding the mind in a way that abides the mind, and these two can eliminate sinking and excitement. The third is, in the Compendium of Topics it says, "What is the nature? It is diligence." So it is said. The fourth is, the first two cause all unfavorable factors to diminish, and the last two cause all favorable factors to increase. Why are these four called right abandonment? Because they abandon what is to be abandoned, both arisen and not arisen, therefore they are named right abandonment by the name of one aspect, or as it says in the Commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, "Why is it said that diligence is right exertion? Because it causes body, speech, and mind to abide correctly." Thus the statement of "abiding correctly" appears, and it is also the same in greatly eliminating harm. The third is the third of the separate explanations, that is, explaining the four aspects of the feet of miraculous power. The third is, after the path born of effort, the path of completely subduing samadhi is explained. Having diligence that takes and abandons what is to be abandoned and what is to be cultivated is to make the mind workable with samadhi, because it is the basis for the arising of special qualities. Thus, that path is the four aspects of the feet of miraculous power. So, with what object, in what way, with what nature, and for what purpose does one subdue the mind? The first is, the activities of miraculous power such as transforming one body into many and transforming many bodies into one. The second is, in the Middle Beyond it says, "Abandoning five faults, cultivating eight mental activities, arising from the cause of reliance." Like this, cultivating the eight mental activities of abandoning, these eight are: desire, effort, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity.

Having tamed, it is said so because it manifestly acts for the sake of abandonment. That which possesses this is the cause. Among these, the first four are manifest desire, diligence, manifest faith, and the ability of body and mind. These four are also established in order as the support and the supported, the cause and the effect. Manifest desire precedes effort, therefore it is the support of effort, and effort for its sake is the supported. The cause of the support desire is faith, for if there is faith that deeply believes in cause and effect, then one will desire the action of calming. The result of the supported effort is pliancy, for by initiating diligence, pliancy of body and mind arises. For the sake of abandoning what are these actions performed? There are five things to be abandoned. From the Madhyāntavibhāga: 'Laziness and instructions, forgetfulness, sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults.' Like this, sinking and excitement are combined into one, so there are five. Among them, the first is at the time of application, the second is at the time of applying, the third is at the time of calming, the fourth is at the time of arising of sinking and excitement, and the fifth is a fault at the time of pacifying sinking and excitement. In order, they are not applying, the mind does not enter into calming, the mind does not become capable, not attending to the antidote to sinking and excitement when needed, and attending to it when not needed. The way to abandon these is that the first four are the antidote to laziness. That is also diligence, but it is also in terms of possessing cause and effect. The latter four are from the Madhyāntavibhāga: 'Do not forget the object and know, sinking and excitement and their removal, in stillness then abide.' Like this, therefore abandon the latter four to be abandoned. The third has two, the general nature is, from the Abhidharmasamuccaya: 'What is the nature? It is samādhi.' From the Abhidharmakośa: 'Those who mainly speak are also, the qualities of application and arising.' Thus, the first three groups are said to be wisdom, diligence, and samādhi, which is said in terms of the main aspect. The individual nature is the respectful application of strong desire for virtue, and the sign of continuous diligence.
