Bas. Meditate on mindfulness closely. Furthermore, as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge, "The four antidotes to perversion." Thus, abandoning the four perversions of clinging to purity, pleasure, permanence, and self, and for the sake of clinging to the four things such as the contaminated body, or for the sake of attaining separation from those four. Why are these four called close mindfulness? The Vaibhashikas believe that just as a woodcutter holds wood and a dog holds a bone, wisdom places the object on the mind with the power of memory not forgetting the object. However, the teacher believes that wisdom first separates the objects one by one, and then memory holds them, so it is wisdom that places mindfulness close to the object. This saying is excellent. The second is the second of the separate explanations, which is the explanation of the four right abandonments. The second is that after the path of contemplating objects, the path arising from effort is explained. That is, examining objects such as the body from the perspective of their own and common characteristics, diligence arises in entering into abandoning what should be abandoned and taking up the antidote. Thus, this path is the aspect of the four right abandonments. So, what is the object? In what way? With what essence? Why abandon it? The first is the four: virtue, purity, and non-virtue, defilement, arisen and not arisen. The second is to abandon the defilements that have arisen in such a way that they do not continue, and not to generate those that have not arisen before, to increase the purity that has arisen, and to generate the purity that has not arisen before, which is to initiate the diligence that is the cause of these four. In this regard, the sutra says: Generate desire. Strive. Initiate diligence. Hold the mind firmly. Abide firmly. Thus, these four are spoken of in relation to each other. This sutra shows that diligent practice is connected with the place. Thus, desire is the place, because it precedes diligence. Diligence is the characteristic of calm abiding, holding firmly, and equanimity, that is, contemplating the characteristics of these three, is the time to practice the faultless antidote. At this time, if insight is stronger and calm abiding is weaker, then like a lamp in the wind, the mind is extremely agitated and cannot clearly see reality. At this time, one should contemplate the characteristics of calm.
