As for the Vaibhashika school and others, they understand the Four Noble Truths, impermanence, etc., as sixteen aspects, and merely by that, they will be liberated. Therefore, they argue, what is the use of seeing that things have no self-nature? As an answer to this argument, the sutras extensively state that if emptiness is not realized, there will be no monks who have destroyed the afflictions, etc. In the Great Commentary, the Diamond Sutra and other sutras are also quoted, extensively stating that if the Four Noble Truths are meditated upon as impermanence, etc., the afflictions will not be reversed, and the cycle of rebirth will not cease. Thus, it is very clearly proven that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the absence of self-nature of phenomena. In the root text, it is also said, "The enemy of the darkness of the afflictive and cognitive obscurations is emptiness." This means that for the antidote to the two obscurations, it is necessary to realize the absence of self-nature of phenomena. Thus, in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, if the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not have the path of impermanence, etc., as the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika schools believe, then there will be the fault that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not abandon the afflictions, etc. This view is refuted, and it is explained that in our own system, their path is also considered to be the path of realizing emptiness. If this is not understood, and it is said that the sutras show that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers have no superior qualities, this is only proclaiming one's own true view. Here, because of the fear of prolixity, I will not elaborate further. In the commentary on the Seven Hundred Prajnaparamita Sutra, it is also said, "Merely seeing the unborn equality is the true Arhat." Nagarjuna also said, "If there is a mind with abiding, how can the great poison of afflictions not arise? Even ordinary dwelling is seized by fierce snakes of afflictions. Saying 'suffering' causes attachment, and the opposite causes detachment. Like an illusion-born being, if one sees emptiness, one will attain nirvana." This means that for phenomena such as the aggregates that have not truly arisen, if one meditates on impermanence, etc., greed and other afflictions will be pacified, but that is not true. Rather, the Hearers are spoken to in that way with the intention of leading them to the Great Vehicle. Thus, Aryadeva, Jaya Ananda, Shantideva, Simhabhadra, Devadeva, Vimalamitra, and others believe that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the absence of self-nature of phenomena. Third, if the sutras and Maitreya say that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the absence of self of phenomena, how should that be interpreted? Then, in other sutras, it says, "The one who carries the burden"

I say there is. Whether it is permanent or impermanent, it cannot be said. How should it be understood that it is said that there is a person who cannot be spoken of? If it is said that this is said to subdue those who are attached to the view of "I", it is with intention. Then, for those who are afraid of proclaiming selflessness, and those who speak of meaning, etc., in order to subdue them, it is temporarily proclaimed that they are liberated by the selflessness of impermanence, etc. In this way, the intention of establishing the path of impermanence, etc., for the hearers and self-realizers, without realizing the selflessness of phenomena, is that there is no complete meditation on that selflessness. The need has already been stated. The harm to reality is: if there is no other path for those who are attached to the Dharma, with the sixteen impermanences, etc., then they cannot be regarded as having completely abandoned the afflictions and as having the characteristics of the noble ones, because both the path and the afflictions have the same object of focus on the aggregates, and they enter into its state in the same wrong way. And, because the mind has abandoned the nature of the four truths, it is not seeing the truth as it is. Furthermore, afflictions such as attachment are caused by the belief in the truth of the aggregates, and if they believe in the truth of the aggregates in all ways, then how can the result be completely reversed if the cause is not reversed? Therefore, the scriptures speak of both the realization and non-realization of the selflessness of phenomena. However, since both scriptures consider it definitive that the hearers and self-realizers have abandoned the afflictions, are liberated from samsara, and are no longer born under the control of karma and afflictions, it is necessary to interpret the statement that they have not realized it, and to regard realization as definitive. If there is no other path than impermanence, etc., then it is impossible to abandon the afflictions, etc., so reason harms its literal meaning, and the literal meaning of the latter is not harmed by reason. For more details on the harm, refer to the commentary on the Madhyamakavatara and the great commentary on the Bodhicaryavatara. If the hearers and self-realizers realize the selflessness of phenomena, then will there be no difference from the Great Seal? The Ratnavali says: From that Hearer Vehicle, the aspiration and the complete dedication of the conduct of the Bodhisattva are not proclaimed, how can it become a Bodhisattva? This is the answer, and it is said that there is no complete meditation on the selflessness of phenomena. If these differences are understood, then the hearers and self-realizers will have the characteristics of the noble ones.
