Now, arising and ceasing are impermanent, flawed and inconsistent with the noble ones, or appearing unpleasant in their presence is suffering, empty of other meanings of self is selflessness, becoming the essence of selflessness is selflessness, its characteristic is the form of self-nature being peaceful, like this there are four. Here, the scriptures say that emptiness and selflessness, and their characteristics, the four forms of peace, etc., are incorrect. Because it is inconsistent with the two great commentaries and any sutra. Therefore, it should be understood as translated in the 'Elucidation of Difficult Points', that selflessness is the characteristic of emptiness, and its characteristic is the form of peace. In this way, selflessness and peace are both synonyms for emptiness and selflessness. Shantideva said that the last two are explained as the absence of self and what belongs to self, but the former is explained in the Abhidharma. If selflessness does not act as the form of the essence, then what is it? The sutra says that there are four, although it says so, it is considering the case of saying three. Secondly, among the four forms of the essence of the truth of arising, the first is the essence of the root cause of suffering, like a disease. The second is the essence of the arising of the aggregate of suffering, like a fruit. The third is the essence of the immediate arising of intense suffering, like a thorn. The fourth is the essence of the cause of continuous suffering, which is the essence of the cause of complete destruction, like the four forms of sin. In this way, the four, such as disease, show the four through metaphor. Secondly, for suffering and the truth of arising themselves, each, that is, each one, has three forms of renunciation, detachment, and cessation. Among them, the characteristic of the first, that is, the essence, is the opposite of external refutation, and external refutation is the law of destruction, so it is the essence of the form of the law of destruction, these two. External refutation is entering into harm, so the opposite is like an enemy. Because of harm, it is fearful and untrustworthy, so it is also called the law of destruction. By thinking about these two, one will become disgusted with suffering and everything. Not being disgusted is because one has not seen it as long-lasting and having faults, but this (two forms) sees it as not long-lasting and having harm. The essence of the second is one's own.

Or because it does not abide for long, or because it is shaken by completely abandoning it with the true path of the Arhat, and without depending on the cause of destruction, it is destroyed by itself, or because the time is ripe, it is destroyed by the corresponding antidote, these are the aspects of extreme destruction, there are two. If these two are kept in mind, one will be freed from attachment to all suffering, because attachment is the aspect of non-separation, and by contemplating these two aspects, one will quickly realize separation. The third nature is that it becomes a place of oppression in both this life and the next, and it is a fearful thing, and it is a place of harm for sentient beings such as Rakshasas, such as infectious diseases, and it is a place of harm for inanimate objects such as disturbances of the elements and lightning strikes, so there are three aspects of harm. By contemplating these three, one can prevent the two kinds of suffering, not abandoning it is because one has not seen its faults, but this is because one has seen the faults of these. So, why are there three aspects to all suffering? This is because the sutras say: For these two, the noble hearers arise with revulsion, that is, they should be disgusted, and they are free from desire, that is, they should turn their backs on objects, and cessation, that is, the three states in which the contaminated mind and mental factors do not function or function subtly, and they enter into them, that is, they possess the practice of the path. From where does it arise? Although it is said to arise from the Sutra of Realization of the Hearers, in the Compendium of Categories it says: Aversion arises in the path of seeing. Freedom from desire is in the complete path of meditation. Cessation is the cessation of all aggregates. Entering into aversion and freedom from desire are those who abide in the practice of these two. Entering into cessation are the non-learners. That's what it says. Among them, the complete path of meditation is the last path of meditation, and abiding in practice is manifested in the path of application and the path of seeing in order. To this, Jamyang Yeshe said: The hearers directly see the faults of all suffering in the path of seeing and arise with aversion, so they enter into the path of application. In the path of meditation, they see that those can be abandoned, and abandon them as appropriate, and turn their backs on objects, so they are free from desire, so they enter into the path of seeing.
