Fifth, regarding the dwelling of mind and body, there are two types. The first is: having faith in the profound Dharma, diligently and separately contemplating the profound dependent origination, and keeping the three doors of liberation in mind and abiding in them, all three are the same. The second is: practicing like a rhinoceros, delighting in being alone and dwelling alone. The remaining two are the opposite of this, dwelling with the sangha. Sixth, all of these, whether relying on and dwelling in a town or village, should diligently guard the body, diligently restrain the senses, and diligently abide in mindfulness, thereby engaging in alms-seeking in towns and so on. When showing affection to the inferior, it should be done with the body, not with words. Because they also teach the Dharma with the body, not with words, and in order to avoid disputes, they do not display miracles. Seventh, there are two types. The general explanation is: as stated in the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha, "Because one becomes enlightened alone without scriptural authority, they are called Pratyekabuddhas." Specifically, the explanation of the first is: as stated in the commentary, "The term 'like a rhinoceros' means that just as a rhinoceros has no second, so too, they dwell without mixing with householders, renunciants, and other Pratyekabuddhas, therefore they are called 'like rhinoceroses.'" Like this. Regarding the latter two, earlier Tibetans explained that because they practice in a sangha, they are called sangha practitioners. However, the texts state that they practice with a sangha, because they practice together with friends. Second, there are three types: the difference of the basis of the practitioner, the nature of the path to be traversed, and its cause—the factors conducive to definite emergence. First, there are two types: the actual difference, and refuting disputes about it. First, there are three types. The first is: according to the order of inferior and superior, it would be appropriate to explain the nature of the Pratyekabuddha path at the end of the Shravaka path, however, for the time being, it is said that the Pratyekabuddha is superior to the Shravaka, because: if there is no different distinction between Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, then their path should not be explained separately from the Shravaka path. By what distinguishing Dharma does the path of those Pratyekabuddhas become different from the Shravaka path? How can the Pratyekabuddha be superior to the Shravakas?

If someone doubts: Since one has attained the state of an Arya, how is it attained? This is to dispel that doubt. The connection to the sutra is: In the path of application, it is said that abiding in the Dharma and not abiding in the Dharma, and being separated from the Dharma, is abiding in the Mother. At that time, among the retinue, some gods were able to understand the language of yakshas, etc. They thought: What Subhuti said about abiding in the Mother is not like that. Knowing their thoughts, the Blessed One spoke the following. The second point is: For those self-arisen Pratyekabuddhas who, in their last existence, attain enlightenment on their own without relying on others, there is no need for others to teach them. At that time, some of the gods in that retinue thought: The language of those yakshas, etc. From "whatever yakshas, etc.," to "if they speak what the yakshas, etc., have said, it can be understood, but what the venerable Subhuti says about the Mother, and the explanation, narration, teaching, and indication, cannot be understood." Then, the venerable Subhuti, knowing the thoughts of those gods with his mind, said to those gods: "Gods, is what is said not understood?" The gods said: "Venerable Subhuti, it is not understood." Subhuti said: "Gods, in this way, not even a single letter is spoken, and what is not spoken is not heard. What is not heard is not understood." And so on. Therefore, not understanding the meaning indicated by Subhuti is profound wisdom. Not speaking even a single letter is profound non-speaking. The meaning of this is that in meditative equipoise, realizing the meaning that is not an object of speech is profound wisdom, and there is no need for others to teach oneself. In the subsequent attainment, what others cannot understand from the fruit-sign of speech is profound non-speaking. Summarizing with the fundamental word "also," it means that one does not need to teach others oneself. As it is said, the later profoundness encompasses the former profoundness, but the former profoundness does not encompass the later profoundness. Because one possesses these two profoundnesses, the wisdom of a solitary buddha like a rhinoceros horn is profound. Alas! Venerable Subhuti, this is clarifying the Mother, it is showing what is more profound than profound, it is showing what is more subtle than subtle. That is the meaning.
