So, after learning these, what is the way to achieve the fruit? There are also three situations here. The first way to achieve it is: after accumulating the merits of hundreds of kalpas, if there is no Buddha appearing in the world, then without a teacher, practice the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, abandon all defilements, and thus attain the Arhat fruit. The second and third ways to achieve it are also: as the causes and conditions described in the previous two paths, when there is no Buddha appearing in the world, without relying on a teacher, practice the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and thus gradually realize the Dharma, until attaining the Arhat fruit; or from the remaining fruits until attaining the Arhat fruit. According to this statement, people like rhinoceros horns also accumulate the merits of hundreds of kalpas, then become proficient in the six matters, and then generate the remaining four paths in the next life, but it is not like what the Abhidharmakosha says, it must be generated on one seat. The remaining two situations are also the same. After becoming proficient in the six matters, in the next life, generate the middle forbearance position to the Arhat fruit, or from the once-returner or non-returner to the Arhat fruit. By being able to generate more, medium, and fewer paths in the life of the last existence, the differences between these are shown. These three situations also have two types: sudden abandonment and gradual abandonment. For the latter, although there is no statement about abandoning cultivation before the path of seeing and after the completion of the sixteen minds, the Yogacarabhumi-sastra says: The self-enlightened one should be known in the same way as the Sravakas. Why? Because their path is the same in nature as the Sravakas. Having said this, all eight abodes can be counted, and what is to be abandoned is also gradually abandoned, and it is also after the sixteen minds that the cultivation is abandoned. For the former, the Abhidharmakosha says: The teacher and the Pratyekabuddha are enlightened, all rely on the edge of meditation, and the liberation part is the same before that. It means that in the life of the last existence, before the path of seeing, after obtaining the near-attainment of the peak of existence, then detached from attachment to the realm of nothingness and below, relying on the edge of the fourth dhyana, realize the remaining four paths on one seat, and at that time abandon the seen-to-be-abandoned and the nine qualities of the cultivation-to-be-abandoned of the peak of existence. According to this statement, greed

Moreover, one will also attain the fruits of Stream-enterer and Once-returner. Fourthly, regarding the time for accumulating merit by these three, the Abhidharmakośa states: "The solitary rhinoceros-like Buddha needs to accumulate for a hundred kalpas." The *Treatise on the Grounds* also states that it needs to accumulate for a hundred kalpas, etc., but there is no explanation for the other two. The former ones say that the latter two are said to be two-thirds and one-third of a hundred kalpas. Some say it is two hundred kalpas and three hundred kalpas. The former seems to consider that these three, the latter ones, have fewer stages of the path to cultivate in their last life. The latter ones think that these are the superior, intermediate, and inferior three, but because there is no reason to establish it, it should be abandoned. So, what is it? The *Treatise on the Grounds* also shows subtle differences, and when explaining the time for accumulating merit, it only speaks of the rhinoceros-like solitary Buddha, and does not say the difference between the other two. In repaying kindness, it says: "The solitary Buddhas need a hundred great kalpas to complete." Because it is said universally, it is reasonable to say that all times are the same. It is wrong to divide kalpas into intermediate kalpas and kalpas with existence. Although there is no clear explanation in the *Treatise on the Grounds*, the *Abhidharmakośa Commentary* says: "A hundred great kalpas are used to purify the accumulations of enlightenment, so it will become like a rhinoceros-like solitary Buddha." Therefore. Among these three, the latter two are some uncertain Śrāvaka lineage people who become solitary Buddhas. The *Abhidharmakośa Commentary* says: "There are two types of solitary Buddhas, namely, those who accumulate and practice, and those who are like rhinoceros horns, etc. Among them, those who accumulate and practice are called solitary Buddhas who have previously become Śrāvaka lineage." And, in that explanation, it says: "Those who have generated the Stream-enterer fruit and the Once-returner fruit, and who themselves attain Arhatship here when the Buddha's teachings decline, are those who accumulate and practice." The *Abhidharmakośa Commentary* says that there are also some ordinary beings who only generate the path of joining, and have previously become solitary Buddhas. Although it is said like this, in the nature of the *Treatise on the Grounds*, it is clear that these three are also divided for solitary Buddhas who have not previously practiced other paths. That is, the first is the one with a definite lineage, and the latter two are uncertain. The *Compendium of Topics* says: "What is a solitary Buddha vehicle practitioner? It is one who abides in the definite or indefinite nature of a solitary Buddha."
