Giving up, as it is said, these are the eight. If these are roots of virtue, they are not afflictions, therefore it is unreasonable to ask "afflictions corresponding to roots of virtue," as it is said in that very text: "World Honored One, when is it a root of virtue, and for what reason is it called an affliction?" The answer is that although it is not a real affliction, the reason for calling it by that name is: because it has the same function as affliction, affliction binds beings to the three realms, and this (root of virtue) also binds to the three realms. What harms the real thing is: the mind cannot be defiled by affliction. As it is said: Wisdom Ocean, like this, those afflictions with such a nature completely bind Bodhisattvas to the three realms. "The three realms also arise from afflictions." And, "As long as it binds to the three realms, it is because of (affliction), but not because the mind is defiled by affliction." The necessity of establishing the name is: although it is not explicitly stated in the sutra, it is to show that Bodhisattvas are committed to altruistic activities, and for the benefit of others, they are born in samsara, therefore it is known that for their own benefit, afflictions will not be abandoned either. Secondly, it appears in the Garland Sutra, as it is said: "World Honored One, just as with taking as a condition, the three existences arise from the cause of contaminated karma, similarly, World Honored One, due to the condition of the ground of ignorance's habitual imprints, from the cause of uncontaminated karma, the three mind-made bodies of Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have attained power arise." This (passage) also does not approve of contaminated karma and afflictions. Among them, the ground of ignorance's habitual imprints is: as stated in the Compendium, the subtle evil destinies of contamination that can only be eliminated by the wisdom of the Tathagata. Regarding this, the ancient predecessors said: Just like a container that has been filled with musk, even if the musk is no longer in it, the fragrance can still be smelled, even if afflictions and near-afflictions have been abandoned, the habitual imprints that serve as the basis for those afflictions still exist. Uncontaminated karma refers to the intention that is not mixed with afflictions but becomes the cause of samsara, just as the eight cases mentioned earlier appear. The second part is divided into two points: refuting the extreme of establishing a name, and explaining the meaning of existence. The first point is: the ancient Tibetan predecessors

Regarding the meaning of not abandoning afflictions: Bodhisattvas need to take birth in samsara in order to benefit sentient beings, and this also requires afflictions as the cause, so they are kept like roots and stems. Aduladhāśa is: Afflictions have four abilities, namely, producing suffering, hindering the arising of antidotes, taking birth in samsara, and producing their own kind. Among these, the Hearers (Śrāvakas) believe that they abandon the first two abilities, but do not abandon the latter two. Then, what do the Hearers use to abandon them? Is it because they are accustomed to the absence of self of the person, which is contrary to the root of afflictions—ignorance and attachment? If so, then Bodhisattvas should also retain them by becoming accustomed to the absence of self of phenomena on top of that, but they must also abandon them, because a powerful antidote has been established. Furthermore, the outflows (āsrava) that are explained as contaminated wisdom of the path must also be considered as ignorance and craving, etc., so the Buddhas must also have them. Because the wisdom of the path does not abandon them in any way, and there are no other antidotes. Furthermore, if taking birth requires ignorance and craving, etc., as the cause, then how do Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Arhats who have entered the Mahāyāna hold onto samsara? If it is said that it is through the ground of the habitual imprints of ignorance and uncontaminated karma, then what about Bodhisattvas? Therefore, those of the Bodhisattvas are the roots of virtue of compassion, aspiration, and bodhicitta, etc., and they also have the same function as afflictions, so they are called that. The former scholar Jamyang Yeshe said, "This seems to be a statement that understands the key points of the sūtras and tantras, but later generations did not understand that it was well-spoken." It can also be said like this: If the cause of that birth is the nature of affliction, then it would lead to the noble Bodhisattvas being born under the control of karma, and the birth taken would be harmed by the suffering of that path, which is also unreasonable. As it says in the *Uttaratantra*: "The noble ones have completely abandoned old age, death, and sickness. They are born from the power of karma and afflictions. Because that is not there, that is not there." And in the commentary it also says: "Samsara here is considered to be the image of the three realms in the uncontaminated realm. It is uncontaminated, so it is the manifested aggregate of samsara. It is not the manifested aggregate of contaminated karma and afflictions."
