If one obtains the four samādhis and five superknowledges, then, Subhuti, will the merit of these sentient beings increase greatly? Having asked this, and receiving the answer that it would increase, (the Buddha) said that even more than that, without attachment, dedicating the roots of virtue would increase merit even more. The intermediate one that produces great merit is: the sons and daughters of good families making offerings to the sentient beings of the three thousand worlds who have attained the stream-entry and so forth up to the solitary realizer. In this three-thousand great-thousandfold world realm, however many sentient beings there are, all of them become stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, and arhats. Similarly, it was also said that they become solitary realizers. The question and answer were given as before. Here, the view that sentient beings of the three thousand worlds make offerings to stream-enterers and so forth does not agree with the sutras and commentaries. The great dedication that produces great merit is: the sentient beings of the three thousand worlds abiding in the cause of unsurpassed bodhi, the ten directions

Having matured sentient beings through the three vehicles, and dedicating all the virtues of those who are learners and non-learners, etc., who have transcended or not transcended the world. However, the sutra says that first, these are gathered together as one by wisdom, and then rejoiced in, and then the merit is dedicated. Therefore, the meaning of dedicating the roots of virtue of others is: When rejoicing without jealousy arises, one obtains the same as the doer, and it seems that such merit is used for dedication. The previously shown twelve dedications are the number of dedications, not the object of dedication, so do not mistakenly think that it is dedicated by the twelve dedications. Sixth, the nature is: As the Ornament says: "The aspirations of the teachings are mind and desire together." Therefore, the mind that makes the roots of virtue grow into Bodhi, and the desire to want to be inexhaustible, etc., are appropriate, and the wisdom of realizing no self-nature is also needed. Third, divided into three: The first is: After the dedication, the third with outflows is rejoicing, which is called attention. Because the objects of virtue that have been properly dedicated in the above manner should be expanded by rejoicing. Here, the dedication after and the collection before are shown to explain that the merit of dedication is expanded by rejoicing, and the dedication of merit by rejoicing, both of which represent each other. The connection of the sutra is: If it is said that after gathering the roots of virtue into one, one should rejoice, then how much rejoicing is needed to become the most excellent, this is the answer to Subhuti's question to the Tathagata. The second is: Rejoicing in the roots of virtue with skillful means, and rejoicing in it with non-objectification, means that rejoicing attention is meditation, as stated in the treatise or this sutra, thus becoming two kinds of rejoicing with conventional and ultimate objects. Thus, in the way of non-objectification, the great Bodhisattva practices the perfection of generosity, and from the time of practicing the Prajnaparamita, one should skillfully dedicate those roots of virtue to unsurpassed perfect Bodhi. The third is: Rejoicing is what should be practiced. Where to practice? In the roots of virtue, etc. With what to practice? With the most excellent of the exhaustion of jealousy, etc. How to practice? In the conventional, with skillful means.

Like visualizing as an illusion, and realizing that nothing is clung to with the wisdom of ultimate truth, that is (reality). The third is: there are three contaminated paths of cultivation, and among them, by applying aspiration, one can manifest and accumulate many merits, that is, generate merits. As stated in the sutra: "The faith of the inconceivable, its ripening is also inconceivable." Like this, it is the faith of believing in the supreme object. The analogy of accumulation is: just as gold powder comes from pure gold mines. By applying dedication, one can make the virtues generated by aspiration become limbs of perfect enlightenment, that is, become the cause. With wisdom and compassion, one increases the virtues into perfect enlightenment. The analogy of transforming into a cause is: just as a goldsmith makes gold into gold earrings and other ornaments. By applying rejoicing, the practitioner of rejoicing himself and others who do good deeds can obtain the same merits. Because by eliminating jealousy, one cultivates joy as if one had done it oneself for the good done by others. That is to say, if the wisdom is the same, it is the same, and if it is not the same, one can also obtain the same (merit), so it is explained. These three are the summary of the meaning from the aspect of the function of the three contaminated ones. These were created by the Holy Ones, and later this teacher also quoted them in the Commentary on Valid Cognition and the Lamp of Wisdom, etc. The second part is divided into two points: the common connection and the explanation of each meaning. The first point is: after the contaminated path of cultivation, the uncontaminated path of cultivation is explained in the order of inferior and superior. There are two paths of cultivation, which are the manifestation of qualities and the complete purification of defilements. Again, it is the same as before. Regarding the reason for the distinction, some say it is severance and realization, others say it is the path of no interval and the path of liberation, and still others say that there are two types: the manifestation of qualities with the object of other-powered and the elimination of defilements with the object of perfect completion. If it is according to the first statement, then the pure path of cultivation is severance, and it will become unconditioned. That is also unreasonable. Because "extremely pure" refers to the path of cultivation, it is said that the path of cultivation can eliminate nine defilements. The second one is also not feasible, because "the great and other defilements, the antidote is small" it is said that it can destroy the nine to be abandoned.
