Those who consider the path of seeing in the Mahayana to have sixteen moments, how does this not contradict the many statements in the scriptures? Because other scriptures, such as "the second moment," etc., consider the last fifteen moments to belong to the path of cultivation, so they are considered to be imputed. If the path of seeing is not imputed, then it is also not real, therefore it contradicts the statement that the path of seeing has sixteen moments. This statement is not found in the root and commentary of the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning, which you yourself consider to be the standard, nor in the view of this teacher. The latter has already been stated, and the former will be explained later. The third part is divided into two points. From the perspective of the Middle Way, the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning says: "After the knowledge of Dharma, if there is a distinction in this, even the most subtle object, by what means is it imputed to be born? The unskilled one does not see the meaning of dependent origination." In the commentary, it says: "Thus, the knowledge of Dharma, which takes dependent origination as its object, which is without arising and ceasing, because the three truths are dependently originated and without self-nature, Nirvana is also its self-nature, therefore realization is only one. If so, how are the fifteen moments of the path of seeing established? Some schools do not accept the fifteen moments of the path of seeing, but consider realization to be only one, their view does not contradict this. Those who believe in fifteen moments, also for the benefit of those who are tamed, divide one nature of wisdom and establish it as fifteen parts." Its meaning is: by knowing that the Dharma of dependent origination is without arising and ceasing, one can also know that the nature of suffering, origin, and path are also without arising and ceasing. And this nature is also the nature of cessation, therefore one can simultaneously know the nature of the four truths. After the knowledge of Dharma, it is not realized sequentially in a certain way. Therefore, realization is only one. However, the establishment of fifteen or sixteen moments is for the benefit of those who like elaboration, because they are not afraid of the nature of the four truths, and by knowing the Dharma-tolerance in a proper way, Dharma-knowledge arises. The same is true at the time of subsequent knowledge.

Like that, not being afraid and possessing the power of intelligence, it is therefore considered subsequent forbearance and subsequent wisdom. In the Compendium, it is said as follows: As it is said, the teaching abides, prospers, is established, with elaboration, and the ultimate truth is established, each self-aware, without elaboration. Among them, with regard to the first establishment, four minds that are in accordance with the aspect of the knowledge of dharma, and four minds that are in accordance with the aspect of the knowledge of subsequent realization, for as long as those eight minds arise, until that time, immediately following that, there will also arise one mind that has entered into complete meditation of calm abiding alone. If these are combined, they become nine minds, and these will make the path of seeing completely perfect. Thus, the four dharma-forbearances that are in accordance with the aspect of the knowledge of dharma and the four subsequent-forbearances that are in accordance with the aspect of subsequent knowledge, a total of eight, and one mind of calm abiding, a total of nine, it is said, but because there is knowledge, it is the establishment of sixteen. Also, in that very text, it says, with regard to the second establishment, only one mind that is in accordance with the knowledge of suchness, starting from the nature of the mind, will make the path of seeing completely perfect. Thus, it is said that one mind with suchness as its object will perfect it. Moreover, the first is for the sake of the teaching abiding, explained to the disciples, with elaboration, and the second is, the way it arises in the continuum of the yogi, is the establishment of definitive meaning without elaboration. In the commentary on the Compendium, it is also said that the sixteen are merely establishments. In this way, if the latter view is combined with the view of the teacher mentioned earlier and accepted, it is easy to practice for the time being. Second, there are three: briefly showing the nature of the path of seeing, extensively explaining the aspects of the way of meditation, and refuting the view that does not explain the aspects. First, there are two: the first is, it has been explained. Where? This path of seeing has external benefits. Through what means? Through the means of showing the moments of forbearance and knowledge in four ways each on the two truths with defilements and the two truths without defilements, a total of four truths. Where? In the knowledge of the path itself, that is, at this time. The second is, it is said that the path of seeing is of great benefit. Where is it to be meditated upon? This.
