Having renounced and taken full ordination, one goes to the charnel ground and thinks, "Where did these bones come from?" From ignorance to old age and death, through contemplating the arising and ceasing of the twelve links of dependent origination, relying on the actual basis of the fourth dhyana, one realizes the latter four paths in one lifetime, thus it is taught. The second path is: making the arising of the Buddha pleasing, relying on a noble person, listening to the sacred Dharma, and properly applying the mind, thereby generating the first three paths of application that were not previously generated, and in that lifetime realizing the Dharma, or not being able to attain the fruit of a renunciate, in order to attain those two later, one must be skilled in the six things. In the actual basis of the ground, there is no clear explanation of patience, but the lamas consider that patience of the middle grade and below should be generated, that is, from great patience to the highest Dharma and the path of seeing, it arises continuously, but because this cannot generate the path of seeing in that lifetime, it is thought. The third path is: relying on the same cause as before, thereby realizing the Dharma, and being able to attain the fruit of a renunciate, but not being able to attain the Arhat, therefore, through the path of transcendence, in order to attain it later, one must be skilled in the six things. The fruit is either of the first two, therefore it is not a non-returner, because in the common language of the Abhidharma, after obtaining the non-returner, it is impossible to be born in the desire realm due to the power of afflictions, this is because one must be born in the desire realm due to the remaining things to be abandoned. In this regard, Tibetans use the terms of the middle of the middle faculty and the dull of the middle faculty, and the magnitude of accumulation, respectively. In the treatises, it is said that there is accumulation that precedes the path of application but does not precede the fruit, and accumulation that precedes both. In the Compendium, it is said: "Corresponding to the part of definite discrimination, whether it is previously ungenerated or generated, whether it is previously unattained or attained, it is also acceptable, without the arising of a Buddha, one realizes the path oneself, becomes like a rhinoceros and dwells alone, or becomes a solitary conqueror, whatever the accumulation and conduct, one obtains the end of suffering." It means that because the path of application has not been generated, after realizing the path, one dwells alone like a rhinoceros, and after realizing the path through the remainder, one becomes a solitary conqueror.

Therefore, it is said (in the scriptures) that (these are) the ways of accumulating and practicing (merit). Third, if one trains in these three paths, how will the fruit be achieved? There are also three situations here. The first way of achieving is: after accumulating merit for a hundred kalpas, if no Buddha appears, then without a teacher, practice the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, abandon all afflictions, and attain the Arhat fruit. The second and third ways of achieving are also: as the causes and conditions mentioned in the previous two paths, if no Buddha appears, then without relying on a teacher, practice the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and gradually realize the Dharma, until attaining the Arhat fruit; or from the remaining fruits until attaining the Arhat fruit. According to this statement, for someone like a rhinoceros horn (Pratyekabuddha), it is also after accumulating merit for a hundred kalpas, mastering the six objects, and then generating the remaining four paths in the next life. But they do not want to necessarily generate (the four paths) on one seat, as in the Abhidharmakosha. The remaining two situations are also the same, after mastering the six objects, in the next life, generating (fruits) from the lower forbearance to the Arhat fruit, or from the once-returner or non-returner to the Arhat fruit. These differences are shown by being able to generate many, medium, and few paths in the last life. These three situations also have two types: simultaneous abandonment and gradual abandonment. For the latter, although I have not seen a discussion of how to abandon what is to be abandoned in the path of cultivation before the path of seeing and after the completion of the sixteen minds, it is said in the Yogacarabhumi Shastra: 'It should be known that the Pratyekabuddha is exactly the same as the Shravaka.' Why? Because they are the same as the Shravakas in the nature of the path. Therefore, all eight abodes can be counted, and what is to be abandoned is also gradually abandoned, and it is also after the sixteen minds that what is to be abandoned in the path of cultivation is abandoned. For the first situation, it is said in the Abhidharmakosha: 'The teacher and the Pratyekabuddha's enlightenment all rely on the edge of meditation.' This means that in the last life, before the path of seeing, one obtains the near attainment of the peak of existence, and then abandons attachment to the realm of nothingness and below (the desire realm and the form realm), relies on the fourth dhyana, realizes the remaining four paths on one seat, and at that time abandons what is to be abandoned in the path of seeing and existence.
