Thus, these two and the Dharma friends of Shāntirad clearly explained that they are not actual Buddhas. Although these two are equally not real Buddhas, they are named Buddhas and Tathāgatas, but it is not said "perfectly complete enlightened Buddha," this is to show that the activities are the same but the abandonment and realization are different. Second, what are the nine stages to be abandoned? For those of the lineage to attain Bodhi, such as the Shravakas, the first determined lineage is the stage of lineage, and what is included here by the "etc." of the Shravakas, and where is this stage located? Shānti only said, "The lineage of those who attain Nirvana is the stage of lineage," and did not say much beyond that, and the reputation is also like that. In the Moonlight, for this, "The stage of lineage is the stage that is in accordance with the part that definitely distinguishes those who have the lineage of Nirvana." Some establish that the first three that are in accordance with the part that definitely distinguishes are the stage of white appearance, and the stage of lineage is the stage of the supreme Dharma, but this should not be established here. One's own school establishes the path of joining as the stage of lineage, thereby preventing other schools. In the two greater and lesser Decrements, here, respectively, the stage of faith practice and great patience, and the two of the heat stage, peak stage, and supreme patience stage, are respectively said to be the white appearance and the stage of lineage. From the smaller one, because one first sees the pure white Dharma, it is called the stage of white appearance. This stage of lineage is of the three Bodhis. In the Decrement of the Hundred Thousand Verses, it says, "In the stage of faith practice, when one is in the heat stage, peak stage, patience stage, and supreme Dharma, because one has the lineage of the three Bodhis, it is called the stage of lineage." Although there are various such statements, both the noble one and the teacher use the word "etc.," the meaning of which is to include both the Pratyekabuddha and the Mahayana, and also, the so-called "lineage" must also be from the time when realization arises in the accumulation path and the stage of faith practice, until one has not obtained one's own Bodhi, one does not regress to others, if so, for the Shravakas, those who tend towards peace from the two are determined from the accumulation path, therefore from that time until the supreme Dharma, from the path of seeing to the eighth stage, etc., will be like that. Because transforming into Bodhi is uncertain, it is not counted. For the Pratyekabuddha, from the two, like a rhinoceros

As before, the accumulations and conduct are uncertain. If the Mahayana faculties are very sharp, then it is certain from the path of accumulation, and then one should practice the supreme Dharma, while the middling and dull ones are uncertain there. The first fruit, the realization of entering the stream of the fruit of the stream-enterer, is the eighth ground, because counting upwards from the Arhat, it falls on the eighth number. The first stream-enterer, if held from the path of joining, then the path of seeing does not pervade, and if according to the explanation of words, then for the instantaneous stream-enterer, there is no meaning of words. The realization of just the fruit of constantly entering the stream is the ground of seeing, because it is said that one sees the selflessness of the person through the path that transcends the world. Or, it is said that it is because it is the first of completely seeing the four truths. The realization of just the fruit of once-returner is the ground of attenuation, because two-thirds of the afflictions of desire have been abandoned. The realization of just the fruit of non-returner is the ground of detachment from desire, because one is detached from attachment to desire. The realization of the Arhat is the ground of realizing what has been done, because one realizes that the affairs of one's own path have been completely accomplished. Thus, there are six grounds. The remainder of the first stream-enterer, the realization of the latter three stream-enterers combined into one is the Hearer's ground. How is it known that the meaning of the Hearer's ground is that? Because the term Hearer's ground is not related to a specific term, it is a general term, and it is not contradictory to apply it to particulars. It is not contradictory, but how is it known that it applies to the three? Because it is the ground of the occasion, it must be explained as any realization of the Hearer's stream-enterer, and because each of the others except those three has already been explained. Therefore, it can also be understood because it is the remainder. Then, since one part of the upper ground and the remaining five are the Hearer's ground, why is it mentioned separately? Because here it is intended to clearly explain the classification of the three vehicles, therefore the Hearer's ground is mentioned. In short, if that name is not mentioned, then the upper grounds will each have different names of grounds, so it is difficult to understand the classification of the three vehicles, and if that name is mentioned, then the grounds of the solitary realizer and the Bodhisattva are also mentioned, so it is easy to understand that classification, as it is said in the "Sunlight Treatise": The Hearer's ground is intended for clearly explaining the three vehicles, that is, the Hearer and the solitary Buddha.
