To examine in this way, and to honor them, are spoken of separately. The meaning of this in order is to realize the Dharmakāya of the Buddha as it is, and to respect the Dharma for the benefit of sentient beings. Although Shānti also has this in the root verses, in the commentary, approaching the Buddha and examining thoroughly are made into one, and it is counted as one of the eight dharmas. The great being also, in accordance with the words of the sutra, honors the Dharma for the benefit of all sentient beings, and realizes the body of the Buddha as it is, and makes a separate explanation. The teacher's intention is that the meaning of approaching the Buddha is also to please him. And by what does one please him? By examining without error what the nature of all dharmas is at all times, one pleases the Buddha. This is his intention. In the Ornament of Clear Realization (Abhisamayālaṃkāra), it says, "In order to thoroughly examine the Dharma at all times, one pleases the Tathāgata," which shows the necessity of pleasing him. Both of these are necessary for both, so it is representative. The intention of pleasing him is for the sake of truly realizing the nature of the Dharma, and there is no better method than that. In short, the reverence for the Dharma, which is spoken of for the purpose of honoring the Buddha, is to cherish the Dharma. Realizing the Dharmakāya is its necessity, and cherishing it through that, and cherishing itself is the cause of pleasing the Buddha, so there is no contradiction with the sutra and the teacher. Knowing the faculties is to know the birth and death of sentient beings and the good and bad deeds they have done through the door of generating the divine eye, and thus they go to good or bad destinies. Or, the sutra says that by abiding in the ten powers, one fully knows the superior and inferior faculties, so the divine eye is the ninth power, so it should represent the others. Purifying the Buddha-field is to purify the continuum of sentient beings in a non-objective way, relying on the Buddha-field of essence, and abiding as an illusion is to abide as an illusion in all samadhi and post-samadhi, that is, to abide in the samadhi of illusion, and although one does all the deeds of a Bodhisattva, one does not cling
