Furthermore, it is believed that coarse perception is not existent, and subtle perception is not non-existent. These meditations cannot be established with limbs like (others). As the Compendium states, "The formless (meditations) are of one taste in quiescence, therefore there is no establishment of limbs." Thus, they abandon the previous objects and aspects and enter into each of the subsequent ones. Therefore, by means of focusing on the formless (meditations), it is called transcending the lower realms. Third, as the Compendium states, "By meditating on the first dhyana as small, medium, and large, there are three births of the first dhyana. Just as with the first dhyana, so it is with the remaining ones. There are three births of each of the dhyanas." Thus, by meditating on the four dhyanas as small, medium, and large, three births each are accomplished from the realm of Brahma to the Great Fruit realm. Thus it is said. Therefore, both the container world of the form (realm) and the ripening of the essence of sentient beings are the meditation of birth, because they are the self-result and ripening of the meditation of equipoise. The result of meditating on the formless (realms) is also stated in the same text: "In the formless (realms), since there is no other place to dwell, there are no different births. There, by meditating as small, medium, and large, higher, lower, inferior, and better births are manifested." As it says. Because the formless (realms) have no place divided by above and below, yet for those four (formless realms), there are higher and lower births due to the length of life, and good and bad due to the amount of afflictions. So, what is the meaning of meditating as small, medium, and large? If there is neither respect nor familiarity, it is small; if there is either one, it is medium; if there are both, it is large, so it is explained. Third, as the Hearer's Ground states, "When entering into equipoise in these meditations, signs appear such as the body sinking below the earth. When entering into equipoise in these formless (meditations), signs appear such as the body flying into the sky." As it says. Fourth, as the Treasury states, "Meditation and the formless are their own ground, dependent on the lower ground, the lower ground is not needed." Generally speaking, it also says, "The noble one of the peak of existence has nothing, having directly realized, the outflows are exhausted." Thus it is specifically stated. Thus, these meditations and formless (meditations) are all paths.
