It should not be feeling, because meditative concentration does not have a place for consciousness, as consciousness is scattered outwards. It should also not be the feeling that accompanies consciousness, because joy is also a feeling, a mental pleasure, and if pleasure and it both arise simultaneously, the substance being the same would diminish, and if they arise sequentially, then the first and second dhyanas would not become five limbs and four limbs, because the limbs arise simultaneously. Thus it is thought. Regarding this, in the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha, others say: The faculty of pleasure born from the mind is completely absent, even in all three dhyanas, only bodily pleasure is established as a limb. Thus they say, considering the pleasure of all three first dhyanas not to be a place of consciousness, but rather the feeling of pleasure that accompanies bodily consciousness. If one considers pliancy to be pleasure, why is it not mentioned in the fourth dhyana while experiencing it? If one says that pliancy is in accordance with the arising of pleasure, then there would also be a fault for the third dhyana. Therefore, in the sutra of the third dhyana, because it is said in one's own words, "the body experiences pleasure," it is considered to be bodily feeling. From the Hearer's Ground, it is said: Because the body of form and the body of mind separately experience the pleasure of feeling and the pleasure of extreme pliancy, therefore it is said, "the body experiences pleasure." Thus it is said that the body of form experiences pliancy and the body of mind experiences the pleasure of feeling, which is inconsistent with the body of form just mentioned and the Vaibhashikas who only consider the body of mind. Therefore, in the commentary on the Compendium, it is said: In the first and second dhyanas, merely experiencing the tranquility of the feeling that accompanies consciousness makes the body with its faculties workable, therefore the body and oneself and the corresponding consciousness companions are satisfied with the aspect of joy, therefore the two actions that benefit the mind are sequentially established as pleasure and joy, which is consistent with the Hearer's Ground. Samadhi is what gathers oneself and the corresponding mental factors of the mind onto one object of focus, such as tranquility and coarseness. Among the five, because conceptualization is the coarsest, it is seen as a fault, and through cultivation, attachment and separation from it alone is called the first special actual practice, as the authors of the Abhidharmakosha explain. The second is, dhyana.

The four excellent aspects of the second dhyana are: In the Abhidharmakosha, it says, "Excellence is faith." Although some believe that this refers to the faith of conviction that arises from liberation from the first dhyana through samahita, the Compendium says, "Then, what is the nature of the dharma that is completely pure within?" It is said, "It is the nature of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity." It is like that. The remaining limbs are as before. Here, it is said in the sutras of the upper and lower sections of the Prajnaparamita that (the second dhyana) is free from both investigation and analysis. In the Destruction of Harm in the Hundred Thousand Verses, it says, "The first dhyana is with investigation and analysis. The second dhyana is without investigation, but only with analysis. The third and fourth dhyanas are without both investigation and analysis." This statement, in the Hundred Thousand Verses, states that the samadhi with investigation and analysis is the first dhyana, and that without investigation but with analysis is between the first and second dhyanas, which seems to be the cause of confusion. Also, in the Hundred Thousand Verses, it is said that without investigation and analysis is from the first dhyana to the peak of existence, but this is because of a typographical error, and should be counted from the second dhyana. The space between the first and second dhyanas should be considered as the essence of the first dhyana. Because in the Hundred Thousand Verses, it is said that the second dhyana is free from investigation and analysis. Third, among the five limbs of the third dhyana, bliss refers to: the feeling of the wheel of consciousness, that tranquility, is merely the state of being free from the agitation of joy. Mindfulness and awareness are the antidotes to the pervasiveness of joy, holding the aspects of the object, and observing whether it is in accordance with it or not. Equanimity refers to being free from the faults of investigation, analysis, and joy, and therefore not being disturbed by them. Thus, these three, mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity of action, although present in the first dhyana, are defiled by investigation and analysis, and in the second dhyana are also obscured by the fault of joy, so they are not directly mentioned by their names, but are called by names such as "excellence." And here, because they are free from these faults, their names are directly mentioned. As the Compendium says, "Then, in the first dhyana, mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity are manifested by the doors of investigation and analysis, so although they exist, they are not mentioned. In the second dhyana, although they are functioning from their own nature, the mind is completely entangled by the afflictions of joy.
