Therefore, it is indicated by the name of complete joy. The third dhyana is indicated only by its own characteristics because it is free from the near afflictions of the mind. So it is said. The fourth is: The limb of the fourth dhyana is completely pure because it is free from the eight faults of investigation, analysis, mental ease, unease, outgoing and incoming breath, pleasure, and pain. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: Because of being liberated from the eight faults, the fourth is immovable. Investigation and analysis, and pure breath, and the four beginning with pleasure. So it is said. These investigation, analysis, joy, and pleasure are also said to be the faults of agitation in relation to the fourth, but not in relation to their own ground. As it says in the Compendium: When those that benefit samadhi, such as investigation and analysis of the first dhyana and so on, enter in order to benefit the respective grounds of the dhyanas and become completely pure, why did the Blessed One indicate them as the name of agitation? Answer: It is indicated by comparing it to other grounds, but not from its own ground. So it is said. The differences of these dhyanas are also stated in the Compendium, as it says: What is the difference between the first dhyana and the second dhyana? Answer: There is the difference of the complete perfection of samadhi. What is the difference between the second dhyana and the third dhyana? Answer: There is the difference of the complete perfection of benefiting. What is the difference between the third dhyana and the fourth dhyana? Answer: There is the difference of the complete perfection of complete purity. So it is said. The third is: Why are the dhyanas established with five limbs and four limbs? As it says in the Compendium of Topics: It is for the sake of the limb of antidote, the limb of benefit, and the limb of the place of both of them. Like this, for the four dhyanas, in order, are investigation and analysis and extreme joy, and the three of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, and mindfulness, and equanimity completely pure, these are the limbs of antidote, because they abandon the afflictions of the lower grounds. This is only the continuum of the antidote of the approaching stage, but at the time of the actual practice, it only severs the connection of the lower grounds, and is not the actual abandoning antidote. The limb of benefit is, in order, the pair of joy and pleasure, and pleasure, and feeling of equanimity, these are

It is because of the benefit of gaining victory by counteracting from the lower realm. The limb that is the basis of everything is samadhi, because it generates antidotes and benefits. Therefore, from the perspective of those three, among those limbs, there is no dhyana of equipoise that is not any of those limbs with a fixed number. Otherwise, it would become that none of the nine mental factors, such as attention and feeling, which are similar to those limbs, would be anything, because the dhyana of equipoise is not, and it is not possible to become something else. Thus, because the second dhyana is established by abandoning vitarka and vicara, the third by abandoning joy, and the fourth by abandoning pleasure, the dhyanas are called transcendence of the lower realm from the perspective of the limbs. The second has four: space and consciousness are infinite, there is nothing, the peak of existence. The first is: When the fourth dhyana is attained, the yogi sees faults in form and virtues in the formless, and in order to reverse the perception of form, he only meditates on the perception of space, which is separated from characteristics such as color, shape, and touch. Then the forms that appear as blue, yellow, etc., and the obstacles that appear as walls and bricks, etc., and the various perceptions that appear as clothes, ornaments, gardens, mountains, etc., disappear. Even if one pays attention to them, they will not arise from all aspects. The object of focus for the approximation and the actual practice here is also as stated in the Śrāvakabhūmi: "As long as one has not entered into the actual practice, one should only focus on space. After entering into samadhi, one should focus on space itself and the aggregates of one's own ground other than that. During the approximation, one should also focus on the lower aggregates." Likewise, the reasoning for the others should also be understood. The second is: Seeing the perception of space as coarse, in order to reverse it, one aspires to pervade everything with just the consciousness that has space as its object. The third is: Seeing the perception of consciousness as coarse, in order to reverse it, when searching for objects with form and without form, one finds nothing, and then aspires to have no object at all. The fourth is: Thinking that the idea of having nothing is also coarse, in order to reverse it,
